Hi there

I have a wheel nut snapped off right at the base so there's nothing to grip to remove the remaining bit of the nut! I have tried to drill it out but its proving to be hard and I dont want to damage the wheel ,I have had an idea that I think will work on the soft alloy nut and that is to use a steel nut and cut a couple of chisel shaped gouges on the leading edge of the steel nut to act as cutters then just screw it onto the remains of the alloy nut any hopefully it will cut it out,, Only trouble is I have been through my bolt collection and cant find one that fits! can anyone tell me what size I am after??

Many thanks Jezzy

Have u tryed hammering a smaller socket then 19mm on 2 it? Also put all the other nuts back on, as tight as u can pulling the wheel away from the nut, 2 create as less force as nessery 2 remove? Worked 4 me a few times,

Makes you wonder if alloy nuts were really a great idea,

Also had a locking wheel nut get stuck, key stud patten wouldn't undo, would just slip out as it was done up 2 tight by last garage that fitted tires. Had 2 push the wheel in with my legs, while someone else turned the nut.

Hi there, Thanks for the reply, Unfortunately there is nothing to put a socket on it has snapped off right at the base leaving only the curved seating part of the nut ,Will try tightening the other nuts as you suggested and see if that helps on the other buggered nuts I have to remove!

Regards Jezzy

I did this the first time I removed a wheel from the Speedster, I snapped 3 without realising.

I looked at drilling but decided that all I would do is damage a £700 wheel :? In the end I took it to the local Porsche Centre who sorted it out for a bill of about £150 from memory.

I invested in a Torque wrench after that and now insist that anyone who touches my wheels uses one as well. :D

The thread size is M14 x 1.5 steel nut & are available from people like Jasmine & other wheel sellers. If you cut teeth in it though it won't work as it will just tighten it.
If there is too little to grip on then you could drill vertically through a steel nut say 2-3mm & then tighten that on. Then using the holes drilled in the nut drill into the ali remains & insert two roll pins. Then you maybe able to bring steel & ali nuts out together.

I would just buy a load of 2 or 3mm drill bits and take your time. If you try and break it off with a steel nut you may damage the wheel under the nut. I new stud is £4, a new wheel lots more!

When I did this to my 944 (after some unmentionable place had put it on with a windy gun) my local indie whipped it off in not ime.
I'm sure there is a proper Porsche tool from the time (a form of hole saw) designed for exactly this. The wheel nuts are relatively soft and it is easy to rip the top off if they are on too tight.
Ask around and see who knows what.
My wheel came off with no damage at all.

I guess u could use 16/18mm core cutter on an sts drill, normally used 2 cut holes in bricks and wood. You can use a drill, but u MIT want something with a cluth Cas if it snags, they can brake your wirist. Never happened 2 me, but should give warring with the suggestion

Core cutter is a larger drill bit with the middle missing. Used 2 make holes 4 pipes can be very large. 150mm

Offer the peace in another bolt hole, mark depth on the bit and then u got ur max depth

Hi guys ,Thanks for all the reply's , Went with the hole cutter idea I had a small starrett hole cutter handy that just fitted over the wheel stud so I removed the center and welded it to a long bolt .Worked really well, drilled the remaining part of the nut out ,took a while to free the wheel once the nut was off due to some of the nut remaining attached to the stud but no damage to the wheel and the stud is still serviceable once I re-tap the first few threads!!

Many thanks again for the advice Jezzy
