Hi there,

I was thinking of stripping the powder coat and polishing my cup 2 alloy wheels ,Does anyone know if they have a high magnesium content? I have read that if it is over 20% they wont polish to a shine , ,I think they would look nice ,any opinions? Also looking at possibly getting them clear powder coated after polishing,Has anyone done this or seen a set done before?

They polish really well

if you powdercoat in clear it will not stick well to the polished finish the smallest stone chip and the water will get in.....they will last 1 year at best or so Ive been told, it is not recomended.....

I treat mine with Autosol every 2 weeks this keeps them looking good

Don't use powder coat or laquer on polished wheels, waste of time.

Use metal polish and seal with a couple of coats of Rimwax.

Thanks for the rapid replys ,I have found a product that will strip the existing silver powder coat,my next question is ,what will The alloy be like under the powder coat? Is it rough and how long do you think it might take to fine polish a wheel by hand/ drill buffer etc? I really think they will look the dogs danglies ,but I dont want to spend a hole day polishing one wheel !

get someone to do it for you! ..its a labour of love ..........(about £40 per wheel)

Hi guys, Just a bit of an update,I decided to bite the bullet and have a go at stripping and polishing a wheel,I got hold of a tin of gasket remover stripped the powder coat off and now I have started to sand ,I recon that I might be able to do a wheel in about 4 hours but hopefully I will get quicker on the second one, Will keep you informed of my progress,But my time estimates for now are as follows

1/ remove powder coat 1 hour per wheel
2/course sand 1/2 hour
3/fine sand 1 hour
4/ polish ?????????????

I will have to take a load of pics, I keep meaning to but I always get carried away in the moment whilst working on the car and get tunnel vision and forget about anything else!!. I will start a picture post when I do wheel no!2

Will get the pics on asap as promised but just thought I would give a quick update, My Actual times per wheel are as follows

Task Actual time


Strip powdercoat 1 3/4 h
Course sand 80 grit 1/2 h
Medium sand 180 grit 1 h
Fine sand 600 then 1200 1 1/2 h
Polish 3 h minimum

Total 7 3/4 h min

So double what I estimated minimum !,Is it worth all the hard graft? Will be when they are all done and it beats watching east enders ,Definately not for the faint hearted and as said a "labour of love"

Kongsodoken when you said about £40.00 a wheel was that just for the rim? Because if you know someone who will strip and polish my last 2 wheels ( the whole wheel not just the rim) for £40.00 each I will bite there arm off upto the elbo for that price!!

my rims cost £5 each to have polished ....I know a company in birmingham any good to you

I watched a Utube clip a while back where the guys jack the car up at the back and with the tyre off but the alloy still bolted to the hubs, they run the car in 2nd gear and you can polish the rim using different grades of wet&dry then polishing liquid, it doesn't take much time at all but that's just the rims of course. Also good if you have curbed the wheels previously, you can use a file to remove the indents before using wet&dry to polish.
