Guys as some of you know im about to convert mine to manual.

What would happen if their was too much fluid in the auto gear box? Im just curious as i still dont have all the parts to convert her.
She does change gear if i put my foot flat on the gas, but as soon as i take my foot off she goes straight back down the gears

Thanks for looking Mark

Hi Geoff.
I'm going to jack the car up and have a look this morning. If I drive her she changes gear if I put my foot on the gas hard, but as soon as I take my foot off she goes back down the gears to 1 and is harsh.
I was going to just convert to manual , but haven't got all the parts and really want to be able to use her.

Many thanks Mark

Hi Mark,

The car should be level, in N, and running when you check the level. Just clean the side of the AT reservoir so you can see the level. Run it through gears and back to neutral to confirm level.

I know next to nothing about auto transmissions of any sort, except that the MB one in the 928 is very sensitive to tranny oil level!

Hi Mark :)

I seriously doubt there was too much fluid, its much more common to be too little fluid with the symptoms you describe...

You MUST check it CORRECTLY though....

OK...testing the level... HOW EXACTLY did you do it as its impossible to overfill a 928 tranny as any excess is forced out of that fill bottle...

Soooo if you removed some, you made it worse....

Bad upshifts/downshifts are almost always caused by LACK of fluid (too LITTLE not too much)

The way you test the fluid level is as follows....

GET engine and tranny fully warm (drive for at least 20 mins)

then get car in air ready to look at level.... it MUST BE TOTALLY LEVEL....

THEN put tranny in EVERY GEAR and hold it in that gear for at least 10 seconds.... then the next gear for 10 seconds and so on....INCLUDING PARK AND NEUTRAL...

When that is all done check the fluid level....

All the best Brett :)

Many thanks Brett, I did check the fluid the way you said and the fluid was right at the top of the container. I have removed fluid twice, About half a mug full altogether.
I will give the old girl a run later, when the traffic has died down.
I must say that when i tried her earlier it ran a bit better.

What happens is it will change gear when i put my foot down, but as soon as i take my foot off she goes straight back through the gears.

Thanks for looking Mark

Hi Mark :)

Can you explain that last sentence again please ??

What SHOULD happen is when you boot it, it SHOULD engage the kickdown and change DOWN and accelerate harder....

When you lift you foot OFF AFTER kickdown it SHOULD change UP into second or more likely third or fourth...

All the best Brett :)

Hi, i changed the filtre and fluid about a month ago. I havent tried moving through the gears, i will get her warm in the morning and try it. :-)
It does change gears but only when you put your foot down hard.
I hope its something stupid. I want to convert her to manual but havent got all the parts yet.

Many thanks Mark
