 Post subject: Location of S2 sender units

I have just taken delivery of my first 928 and the engine bay is a daunting place to look :shock:

I have 2 problem gauges; oil pressure which reads full all the time even when engine not running and the temperature gauge which does not work one minute and is working the next.

Can anyone give me a clue on where the sender units are located :?:

Hi Steve,

Hope you enjoy the S2 & welcome to the forum. The oil sender is under the engine on the right hand side near to the oil filter, which is back of the alternator.
Not sure where the temp sender is. Hope this helps?
See that you have the same surname, not many Oakes about?

Hi John, Thanks for that. Oil pressure sender sounds difficult to get to :( I think that the temp sender is on the top of the engine at the front; I'll remove the connector and see if gauge stops working.

No Oakes is not that common a name; another coincidence I am a Leeds fan :)

Hi Steve,

Welcome to 928 ownership - they are wonderful cars.

Failures of the senders are rare but never say never!

Far more common on 928s are instrument problems caused by aged/dirty contacts in the instrument binnacle itself. Some can be cured by removing the edge connectors at the rear (they have spring-loaded tabs locking them to the circuit board which must be swung out before connector pulled off) and cleaning the contacts on the circuit board using a pencil rubber, or preferably an electrical contact cleaner. You may be able to access these connectors just by sticking your head in the footwell lying on your back! Next time the temp gauge plays up give the pod a smack with your hand. If that cures the problem you are on to something!

Otherwise it's a matter of removing the instrument cluster (you'll find it's well documented procedure online via Rennlist.com, or google things like "Nichols 928 tips". Once the pod is out you can open it up, then clean the contact pads where various gauges bolt onto the circuit board.

I suppose you could also clean the sensor terminals too. It is the sensor to the right of the oil filler cap as you look at the engine from front . But I doubt it's faulty. It has 2 terminals - one drives the temp warning light and the other the gauge.
