Anyone know a source to obtain replacement/spare keys for ignition and also the storage compartment between the rear seats?

Presume not a good idea to cut from a worn original so how do you get hold of the key code for a replacement?

Do you have to go via a local OPC or Porsche GB in Reading??

I needed a replacement key for my 944, a phone call to my local OPC with the chassis number & it was there 4 days later. When I went to pick it up I needed V5C & proof of ID such as Passport. And yes it fitted perfectly.

Hi Paul,

There was a good thread about this on 928org.uk, I've archived them but am away from home this weekend so can't copy it in here.

It's a matter of taking a decent photo of the key, and sending to KeysForClassics.com

Apparently they do a brilliant job and give you choice of the Porsche original key blade (name escapes me but something like 'Hursh'?) or aftermarket. You can get key heads from a number of sources.

A few list members have used this service and had nothing but praise for it. There was also good advice to take a decent digital pic of your existing key just in case you lose both.

Not sure about the lockable rear compartment though. Does this use the ignition key or should I have another key for it?

I used Keys4Classics http://www.keys4classics.com/ via ebay for a replacement long (alarm) door/ignition key, but you can just as easily go direct to their website. It does seem a bit strange e-mailing a photo off and getting your key in the post from Australia, however I can confirm that it really does work and the service was very efficient - they even send you your code on a slip of paper (and they say that if the key doesn't work they'll keep trying until they get it right) so they get my recommendation too. I went for the aftermarket (Silca?) version as, if I remember correctly, it's made from a softer steel than the OE keys so the lock doesn't wear as much but the key wears more.

No idea about the key for the rear compartment, but as it's much simpler a bit like a suitcase key you could just try a normal locksmith. In any case I don't bother to lock my compartment or glovebox anyway - if anyone bothers to break in to the car in the first place then the puny lock on the compartment isn't going to provide any deterrent to them ripping it open

Very true & I was a bit heart in mouth as the only key I had was missing, however all my keys are the same (doors, petrol cap & ignition) so it was likely they were original & they were.

PS Needless to say the old key eventually turned up a month later!

Hi Paul

I have been meaning to get a spare key for my 928 & already have bought a Long "S" Blank. I found a local guy in Stoke who is a whizz it seems on 928's - he is an Auto locksmith working from his house but is well known amongst all the auto fraternity here it seems. Has an Auto Locksmith company & says he used to "pick" a 928 lock years ago when people used to loose their keys.

He says he will charge £25 and it will take 1 hour to cut the key & make sure it works in all the locks so need to leave the car there. He also has lots of the 928 blanks available.

can supply his number if interested.

Hi Guys

Just to let everyone know, I bought a new key off ebay 2 days ago - see link below. From Express Key Services in Kent. Key arrived this morning and works in all my locks on the car...Superb! Doors, Fuel Cap, tailgate and ignition! Amazing value and fast service - all for £15!!! Ben was very helpful and told me he had a couple of other people off the forum call in and get a key cut off the one they brought in to his shop. He was able to cut mine from my Key number on my key tag in my owners manual, he is also able to cut keys from Photo's too!

Ben had managed to find a supplier with a 928 key cradle to fit his cutting machine so he has got set up with the software to identify the cuts needed from key numbers on all Porsche models.

No interest from my side or relation in any way - Just a very happy customer at a very reasonable price!

His details are below.....
