Hi John That seems a bit steep in price. Have you tried Paul Anderson in Stroud? I am sure he quotes about £500 +vat including the water pump purchase. He is definitely the best man for the job. If you fancy having a go yourself and you have the Kempf tool from JDS then its not a bad job to do. Couple of local guys have done it and there are a few long work through's that you can download from the Rennlist site and others to help you step by step. I plan to have a go later this year. If you want me to forward you some links and walkthroughs on how to tackle the job then contact me off list and I will email them over to you. Good luck Steve "A Porsche 928 gives you a sense of being someone special, you drive as if you have to live up to the car. Your temper improves miraculously; if anyone overtakes you or cuts you up, it's because you have given them permission to do so, or because they are suicidal, not because their cars are more powerful or their driving more skilful! It,s six years since mine was done, but the car has done less than 900 miles in that time and stored in a heated dehumidified garage. I guess it,s a bit like playing Russian roulette, you just can,t tell.., but it still tells me it,s an expensive 900 miles having to change the belt at those intervals ! BTW.., ..., PA,s in Stroud , not Slough ? |

Hi John, That is a reasonable quote from most places (I've heard quotes double that), but as Steve says Paul Anderson will be most reasonable and I imagine would do the best job. Sounds a paradox but when you've done as many belts as he has then you get to be quick and know all the tips (for example he keeps a spare water pump in case bolts snap on the old one, to use as precise template for drilling them out). It's down to whether the time/fuel you need to go to Stroud and back is worth it in your estimation, but may help decision to know that people travel from Scotland to have their 928s looked after by Paul. He may not have any availability for ages anyway - good people attract work. You also need to be confident that the garage which has quoted you are expert on 928 timing belts. They need to know what to check while they're in there to avoid a costly repeat of the labour in near future (things like state of cam gears, oil pump gear, rollers, and they should refurb the tensioner and fit new boot as matter of course). You can check the state of cam gears pretty quickly yourself though just by removing driver side cover. |

Cheers guys Im curently living in Melksham, Wiltshire so Stroud is not too far away, by all the recommendations i will use Paul Anderson i think in the near future. My dillema is that the belt has been changed at 105.000 its on 115.000, but the car has been sat for periods of time outside whilst work has been done on it. checked the belt and it looks ok, no cracks etc, and checked temsion witht he tool all good, just im gonna start driving the car soon and will at some stage for peace of mind get it changed out. Cheers John |
