Does anyone know this car? Is it worth bidding on? Please talk me out of it.

Saw this one myself, think it's been listed twice now.

Yeah I saw the car didn't make its reserve so has been relisted. I'm in Scotland so a viewing is difficult.

I thought I recognised the registration number so took a look through some old pics

The car used to be owned by a fella in the Midlands and he was almost a Tipec member but a new baby and work commitments meant that he was talking about selling the car and then he disappeared off the radar.

I remember the car as being well looked after but that was back in 2006! Has to be worth a look if you're close enough Picture is one I took following the car to Castle Combe circuit 928 day in July 2006!

Any opinions on the GT in general? I’m wondering if it be wiser to just go for an S4. I'm guessing for example that manual gearboxes aren't too easy to come by or that cheap to refurbish.

I have a manual s4 and would have liked a GT but they are very thin on the ground
I would say a manual box would be alot cheaper to overhaul than a auto but a new clutch for the manual box is not cheap!
Its a pity this particular has been modded imo but i am sure you could get the interior parts cheap on ebay.
For £5000 it would seem to be a good buy but a thorough inspection and test drive would be needed!

Paul Bird you have amazing memory for cars!

Agree with the opinion that it's a shame it was modified but this will be personal choice,

The description impresses me hugely as this is a guy who knows a lot about 928s and how to look after them, and has been conscientious owner. If it had original interior and as described then it would easily fetch around £10K or more.

I did say please talk me out of it and no one seems to be so far. So a couple more questions. I'm assuming the S4 and GT engines are the same, is that correct? Any idea where I could get an inspection done near Barnsley, South Yorkshire?

The interior modifications and the wheels would put me off, but it's a matter of personal taste.

The M28.47 GT engine has different cams I believe, which results in a different torque profile that's flatter and an extra 10 bhp at 6200 rpm, according to Porsche's official figures

Loe Bank Motors near Bury are often mentioned as 928-friendly (although I have no personal experience of them), is that too far for a test drive?

I did link to the car in the Auto to Manual thread where it's advertised on the 928uk site for £6k; the other car on there currently is an '88 S4 manual for a mere £15k

For the moment at least I am out of the bidding on this one. I mailed the owner and asked if he was prepared to take the car to a nearby specialist for an inspection this weekend if I won. Due to work commitments he declined but offered me the chance to view the car myself prior to bidding which due to work commitments I can't. If it does not make its reserve then I may contact him, otherwise it wasn't meant to be as I can't take a punt and buy on spec. Hopefully it’s a good car and we will see the new owner on here soon. Thanks for the input.

Mike

Its due a cambelt change shortly.

Yeah I noticed it was about 4 years since the last one was done. Would have been fine about getting the cam belt done if I was sure there weren't any other nasties hiding.

It's one of those things that I would want to do anyway. My belt was only 12 months old when I got it re-done. I don't think it is a problem. You can use it to knock the price down.
