Hi Pal I just knew you were going to take the plunge at some point! ![]() Remove all the fuses one at a time and clean all contacts. Then do the same with relays. That might solve some electrical issues which I've found are largely a result of too little use. Steering is a little heavy on the 928 but it might be down to loss of fuid from reservoir as it seems a common fault If you need tech help Stratfordshark is the man to ask See you soon Paul |

Congrats on the 928 - will be interesting to hear your assessment of it compared with 44. On the bulb warning go for simple possibilities first. The bulb warning is very sensitive to different current through the 2 bulbs. It's likely someone replaced a blown bulb with a single one, whereas you usually have to replace in pairs to defeat the bulb warning. Just buy a pair of whichever bulb it is and see if warning's still there. The steering is heavy at low speeds, until the 1990 or 91 model year when the pump was replaced with higher output type. Paul is right though - check the level and you will also see improvement by flushing the fluid and replacing the reservoir (it contains integral filterr, which gets gunged up over time). The hatch release is probably the most complex system in the 928! Is it simply not releasing or is the motor not running when you pull release switch? Cheers Adrian |

My steering felt a lot lighter after a fluid flush. ![]() |

Cheers Adrian Its not that difficult. Its just awkward as the old brittle metal snaps on the tiny bit that links the motor to the linkage then it wedges in the corner and melts cogs whilst getting insanely hot as you dive at the fuseboard so your car doesn't set on fire. not agood start!....orange water coming out of the washer jets, got the s%$t shield off the drivers side took off the washer bottle ,the mouth at the top has a steel insert ..very badly corroded..cleaned it up washed out the bottle 2k primered the insert no water coming out of the jets, luckily chris m +me went to aldi on thursday..there doing small ultrasonic cleaners for £20..did a really good job..put the wheel back on....windows wont go up or down ...pulled all the fuses and relays out..unlike my 944s there no index to the fuse board,..when i picked it up yesterday they didnt work or the sun roof, went over a pothole and they started to work and been ok till now, what no relay is it and what fuse, there must be a block connector as well...i suspect the stratford shark will have an idea! thanks for all the replies it appears that the tailgate motor isint running, have to look at that once ive done my windows...i just want to use it!!!!! first thing its cheaper to insure than my turbo...and much easier to get in and out of, much more relaxed too, feel like a proper grand tourer .....just got too see how it compares on fuel consumption....might have to see if theres some old tankers that need fixing!!!! kongsdoken....im trying ..bought a better camera... need to get lindsay to give me a hand.. regards phil d.h. |

Phil Take a look at this link http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/originalparts/originalpartscatalogue/ Enter 928 and the year and this opens the schematic diagrams. Go to pages 482-488 and there is a list of fuses & relay numbers Hope that helps Paul |

There's no single block connector for the windows/sunroof, and generally the plugs used in 928 are bullet proof (challenge is usually disconnecting them, not failure of the connectors!) So the washers worked to spray rusty water, then didn't work when you replaced reservoir with cleaned collar? That is odd. The intermittent windows and sunroof sounds likely to be a dirty ground. There are loads of ground points on 928 and they shoukd be kept clean, especially on a car you don't know. Offhand I don't know where ground point is for window motors but there's an excellent diagram in the workshop manual wiring section. You can get copy from JDS Porsche (google or him) very cheaply. It't indispensable if troubleshooting 928 electrics. The relay and/or fuse was my first thought till you mentioned sunroof problem as well. You can also find ground point diagram by searching on the 928 section of the Rennlist forum. Latter is the best technical resource on 928s there is. I couldn't run my 928 without it. Good that you've got fuse/relay chart. There is a comprehensive key on the back of wooden cover of fuse board protected by plastic wallet. Yours has gone astray... The nicest online fuse charts are at www.928gt.com just look for "fuse and relay charts"l ink on left side of home page and select your 1985 model year. Make sure your car is 1985 and not just registered 1985. You can onfirm by VIN. The fuses and relays vary slightly from model year to model year. |

oh dear..,.this is getting worse...sunroof came to life for a second or two... now its half open...relay for the windows exploded trying to remove it....must have taken 20yds of excess wire out...why do people leave all the old alarm gubbins stuff in ,?i love my 944!!!!! |

Post subject: | Re: ear ache from the wife.... |
Should have warned you about relays - they can be very tight if not been removed before. Better to use relay removal pliers (Sealey does a pair) or bend piece of metal or find something that lets you pry carefully at the base. Always disconnect battery before working on fuseboard, but especially if you are prying around with screwdriver blades! Otherwise it's too easy to pull can off relay as you found with window relay. Use a jumper to short the sunroof relay contacts to see if the relay has failed (unlikely) or the fuse. It could also be the switch itself failing to make proper contact when depressed. A lot of the undeserved reputation 928 electrics have comes from people who have done bodged job with wiring which sounds like someone has with an aftermarket alarm with yours. If you can remove all this and get back to original situation that will be very helpful. |
