It looks like the guy who bought my 928 last year is selling it on the website "Gumtree".

It's a 1989 S4, so has the digi dash, 124,500 miles, marine blue. He's priced it at £7250 but may take sensible offers. It's done about 4000 miles since I had it.

It's a good one. I spent many hours getting it right, I overhauled the HVAC, had the aircon serviced (new condenser, seals, dryer, etc and it's still working 18 months later) The flexplate was done and all the other 928 issues dealt with. I spent £3,000. I replaced the interior HVAC sensor, window switches, auto trans shifter knob (£150!) HVAC fan unit behind sensor, O/S door trim, speaker covers, and numerous other parts. I was on first name terms with the Porsche dealer parts dept in Wilmslow...
The cambelt/water pump etc was replaced and also the driveshafts, sump gasket, and other items were replaced. This work cost over £2,000. He's had a new auto gearbox fitted and I think it cost him about £2500
The bodywork is (or was) the best thing on that car, it was pretty much flawless, with not a single pinprick of corrosion. There was no seat bolster wear.
I Waxoyled everything with a mixture of 90% Waxoyl and 10% oil. This included removing all the wheel arch liners, so you won't find any corroded fuel lines, bolts, or other seldom seen parts underneath.
I think it's as good a 928 as you will find. I'm not getting anything out of saying that, but there are a lot of 928's for sale at the moment and if you are in the market for one I'd check this one out.
I've not seen the car since I sold it but the advert says he's kept it garaged with a car cover on, so sounds like it's been looked after.

I sold the Ferrari after a year

If you think 928 maintenance costs are high, you want to try Ferrari parts and service prices. For instance the cam belt change (every 3 years) costs £1500-2000 as the engine has to be removed. And that's if they don't find anything else that needs doing.....like the water pump at £750

Having said that, if you can afford it, it's worth it. Fabulous car.

I bought a Lotus Elise S2 instead.

Is it this one?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-928-S ... 35ba233423

Have to say I'm looking around for something as I sold my '62 Thunderbird a couple of weeks ago and decided to take a second look at 928's (was looking a couple of years back but took the safer option, 50's iron with fins n stuff) I was a little put off by the thought of a digital dash and there is a manual car in Exeter for sale though being a dealer it's probably only worth half what he's asking... Just as a refresher do I remember correctly; cambelts with these, it's not a matter of mileage more a matter of time, as in every 4 years regardless of mileage? So if a guy says it's only done 2000 miles since cambelt was changed it means nothing if the belt was done 6 years ago...?

Hi Saul :)

You got the cambelt thing precisely...4 years and you wont have problems.....mileage is irrelavent...totally ....so even 5 miles in 4 years...new belt and preferably pump and tensioners...

All the best Brett :)

Thanks Brett, Alot of these adverts quote mileages and not dates, and most will not accept that the belt needs changing. I won't risk the engine blowing up on my drive home, might not happen but Sods' Law rules and i might just as well throw £5000 in the bin instead and stay home... I should be sensible and buy a diesel Yaris the way fuel prices are going.....

Hi Saul :)

Its a good time to buy as the prices are low and people are put off by the fuel consumption.....I get around 12 mpg around town and 19 on a run and 2 to 4 on Nitrous lol...

The belt /pump etc are around £500 to have changed by an expert like Paul Anderson.

But... my famous saying... when I go out in the morning (daily driver) and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life it puts a smile on my face all day :) :)

All the best Brett :)

Yes, that's my old 928 S4 on ebay again.

Seems like it sold and then the buyer turned out to be a timewaster.

It was a great 928 when I had finished with it, and it looks like it still is. I did all the jobs.....flexplate, aircon, driveshafts, sump gasket, HVAC, window switches, new sidelights, etc
The bodywork was perfect, with no aluminium corrosion or paint issues whatsoever when I sold it in early 2010.

The new owner had to replace the gearbox at a cost of £2500 so I guess that's another thing that won't fail on it in the near future either.
I got around 18mpg around town.
The cam belt was changed in 2009.

Well, being quite tempted by said vehicle I decided to call around a few insurace companies and found that the world has gone to shit!!! All I did was drive around in funny looking cars with fins n chrome for a year and a half and look what's happened... Quoted £813 for 7500 miles a year!!! (Adrian Flux) I'm now 41 years old and not a zit in sight, and that was the best quote so far. I haven't yet tried them all but will try a few more, any suggestions out there. Perhaps I should be looking at some more chrome to polish....

Traveller that is a ludicrous quote from Adrian Flux - maybe for some reeason they want to dissuade 928 owners from taking out policy with them?

It sounds around 3x the going rate. Give Hegarty a call, also Cherished Vehicle Insurance who are a TIPEC sponsor and cut me a good deal last time I looked around.

7500 is a little high for a limited mileage policy - normal upper limit 5000 I think. Were you quoted for a classic policy (you have to have another "normal" car as daily driver) or would the 28 be your regular drive?

Hi Adrian :)

I am with Adrian Flux and it REALLY depends who you talk to as to whether you get a sensible quote from them....

My Flux policy includes my Nitrous plus business insurance for carrying around Computers etc and agreed value of 8.5k and with full no claims its around £550 PER YEAR...

All the best Brett :)

well I'm 41, residence carpark (no garage) 6 years no claims and one sp30, and asking quote for a stock '89 S4... So I feel a bit miffed that I should have to pay more than £350-400 tops, I might try swift cover!!!

Lightning do you remeber the reg. of your old car so I can try "normal" insurance providers online, I may get a pleasant surprise you never know. Will try a few other insurers tomorrow and if doesn't get better I may give up on it. Looks like a really nice car with all the troublesome bits done so I'd hate to miss it even if I don't keep it for long (i never seem to keep anything for long... there's always something else I haven't had yet!!!) Actually I've got to the stage where I've pretty much had everything I've ever had an interest in and now coming round to those I iether couldn't afford before or was too scared to try... If you remember Brett I think I met up with you about 3 years ago at that Army base near Emsworth at the drag racing, I didn't find a decent car that time. I doubt there'd be two nitrous equipped 928's in the south...
