Phew my S4 passed the new MOT today with no advisories - was onky concerned because I get almost no time to work on her these days so a failure would have meant missing most events for next few months till I got her ready!

Tester told me a lot of failures under new test for split boots on rack and driveshafts.

I always go back to same place even though the guy who always checks my car is Mr Fastidious (have to allow an hour minimum). Reason is he is a classics fan too with a Rikey and an Alvis which won besi in their national show last outing! Also the place specialises in servicing coaches so I always like seeing my car next to some huge bus!

As usual I basked in reflected glory as the 928 attracted little crowd of admiring customers and mechanics. A perfect day apart from remark from the tester that "I can't get my head around idea of a Porsche with a front engine"!

Thanks Sean and agreed on new certificates (they don't look remotely official), but at least they now have advisories on them rather than separate sheet which car sales places could conveniently discard!

Garage owner told me of local car emporium recently prosecuted for literally cutting off the advisory section of MOT on car sold to unsuspecting customer.

Good luck Brett - I don't know what the new rules mean for your various mods!

Just had fascinating read of the MOT test industry's trade paper!

The new items for testing came in 1st Jan. But Brett is correct - failure on any new item will be treated as advisory till April, when it will be cause for failure. This staged introduction is to allow testing stations and testers to become familiar with the new items to be included.

The new certificates came in last Oct, and as they use plain paper they are a cost saving measure (small beer compared to what RBS cost us taxpayers but I'll let that pass). The new certificate is no longer legal evidence if mot pass. The only permissible evidence is what's recorded for the vehicle on the mot computer system.

Hi Adrian

Congrats on passing your MOT. Just got back from Local TIPEC meet.

Regards the new MOT certificate & the old advisory, these were always available if you search online. All MOT's and advisories have been recorded online for some years now so you can always check to see if a car has had advisories served on it.

I got my MOT done back in Jan and had a split CV boot so guess next time it will fail.
See you soon
Steve

Had MOT on my Defender in February, and had a fail on split drop arm ball joint boot, was told that this was one of the new additions to the test, added in January, so beware some garages are applying the new items earlier then?

Vehicle ahead of mine being tested was a Defender Sam!

No the tester should not have failed it, but in past many incidents of testers failing vehicles on items. It even included in test so there is general vagueness to tests.

Thanks Steve - I had looked up advisories online in past and this is great tip for anyone here not aware of it (just need V5 ref). But most people not aware of this, so could buy a vehicle with imminent expensive work not declared by seller. Caveat emptor I suppose but decent thing to tell people what needs doing.
