Hi all
can anyone recommend a decent spark plug socket.i have several 1/2 drive size spark plug sockets the right size for the 928 s4 plugs but none will fit down the hole where the ht lead goes . the only one that fits is the porsche tool kit one.I would rather use a ratchet with a socket as i have several different woggle bars that would make the job alot easier.
your suggestions would be most helpfull
cheers Grahame

Hi Grahame,

Yes it says a lot about the 928 that you need a very complete tool set just to change the plugs! I also prefer to use ratchet and extensions, though the tool kit plug spanner is ok (easier to use on some plugs than others).

I have also found spark plug sockets (14mm I think?) mostly too thick to fit the port. The one I use is part of a set of Draper 1/2inch Chrome Vanadium sockets which i picked up years ago. Maybe Draper socket you buy now would fit ok?

That's not much help I know, but I can save you money in that I'm pretty sure a Halfords 3/8 plug socket I once bought is too thick for the job.

Be careful removing the plug boots as they can be tight. Good to break the seal by running something under the boot to reduce risk of damage (greater if leads are in poor condition to start). I use a dedicated plug boot tool to save skinned knuckles and avoid damage.

Cheers

Adrian

Hi Grahame :)

I use a Snap-On 3/8ths drive socket which is already permanently attached to a 10 inch extension with a non removeable wobble drive.....does the plugs brilliantly...but wont be cheap, not sure of price since I have had mine for years, but I have seen them come up on Ebay occasionally... I would guess around £20 ish on Ebay...

All the best Brett :)

I changed mine again last weekend with the tool from the boot. I had to remove the bonnet closed switch to get at plug 2.

Hi
Thanks for the replies Adrian, Brett, and Lee.
Adrian the socket set i have is a draper and all the wobble bars i have are draper expert tools had them for years i shall look for a thin walled 14mm 3/8 drive socket :)
Brett that snap on one sounds ideal as the porsche one needs to be longer to go above the wing imo a shall try and hunt one down. :P
Lee i did manage to do them all with the porsche one but it takes so long. On my triumph cars it takes a few minuits and i use a ratchet to loosen them and then a speed brace with a wobble extention to wind them out, easy but they,re not hidden down a long hole
Cheers Grahame

That's a superb tool Brett - save me a lot of messing around with extensions and u-joints. I will look out for one now on ebay and elsewhere.
