I have long been looking to upgrade my side lights on my 928 S4 as when I drive with them alone they are near useless and driving with Fog lights on is ....well officially illegal if not somewhat gives the desired effect of medium light during poor daylight conditions. So, I set about searching for a set of Audi A8 style "Day-Glo" lights to convert the side lights and make my 928 have a more modern look at the same time. This it typical style for the Europe Cars.

I had looked around at several different types of lights as well as different sizes of lights and had eventually come round to the decision to mount the LED strip lights on the inside of the Front Fog Light lens. This proved to be somewhat more tricky than once thought, so after much pondering, the final set of 12 LED's were mounted above and outside the lens between the lens and the PU bumper, after I had cleaned and polished all the reflectors and the outside of the glass.

I also replaced the Side light bulbs for LED bulbs with a blue/white glow which are better than the originals but not as good as the LED strip. There was a big difference between a variety of the LED strip light sets available and I have now found a set which give out the most powerful light and fit perfectly hidden above the lens.

For the purists amongst us I am sure this will provide pure terror, however, the LED strip lights cannot be seen when they are off and do not affect the look of the car in anyway. My opinion of course. When they are on, I have managed to get the LED strip lights to light up & reflect through the Fog light reflectors and they light up the whole light lens to give a very useful Blue/White glow which will allow you to drive around on side lights in low light conditions with effective lighting to light up the road in front without the need for full lights. Exactly the result I wanted for my S4.

I attended our Central Region TIPEC meeting in Shirley in the UK the other week and everyone seemed very impressed how effective they look. I have been asked by a few members to put a conversion kit together and I will post the details of that separately if it is of any interest to anyone on the list.

I have uploaded some photo's of the car without the lights on and with the lights on for folks to see. Please use the URL link below:

I would be interested to hear the replies & comments.

Hi :)

Very interesting and I would bet that was a LOT of work.... :)

The only thing that worries me is that it is illegal to show ANY blue light to the front of any vehicle, I cannot tell from those pictures precisely how blue they are, and I don`t think I would like to drive up behind a Police car and find out :(

If they are only as blue tinged as HID`s , I think you will be ok...but if a darker blue....

All the best Brett :)

Hi Bret
They are not that blue. But they pass an MOT and are certianly not more blue than a HID light.
Its the clarity of light that they give out compared with a standard side light bulb that I was impressed with. Hence the upgrade.

Thanks for the kind comments

Steve

Car flew through the MOT this week with all lights getting the OK.
The LED's were no problem - however the main beam blue tint bulbs did get a question....but since they were auxilliary the MOT guys let them through.

The car has been out & about for the last 3 days and the number of positive comments and thumbs up are staggering, although some of these may be due to the brake callipers being painted as well. But many are commenting about the LED Dayglo running lights and asking about where I sourced them.

My electrician supplier has had his first batch of 20 LED lights that were ordered as a follow on t my posts online - he managed to get a discount so they are now £32.50 for a pair when he orders in 20's. He has 3 sets left over if anyone is interested at this price of £32.50 plus P&P.

If it helps, I remember seeing a post on the american Rennlist forum saying that you can replace the sidelight relay with something like the windscreen one, to force the sidelights to be on whenever the ignition is on, just like the actual daytime lights on other cars?

Cheers

Hi Steve
I think the sidelights look good yet non intrusive.
I was impressed by the pictures.
Can you let me have your supplier contact details.
Thanks
Andrew

That is good upgrade in your Porsche with led side light. It is much visible in the night that kind of led bulb lights the car. Recently I’ve been planned to add or maybe change the head light to led light, but I can’t decide because I don’t know if the led light is brighter than the halogen light bulb.

I have just upgraded my latest Black 928 with the LED strip lights and it looks great on a Black car. Instead of LED headlights you need to do a HID upgrade for around £70. I have just bought some of these and will post some pics when I have them fitted.

The LED strip lights I can supply for £28.95 +P&P with full fitting instructions if anyone is interested.

Nope! These are stick on SMD lights. There isn't anywhere suitable to stick on a set of strip lights. My LED lights fit above the 928 standard lights and provide a cool DRL daytime running light look wihtout being stuck on or being intrusive to the 928 design or shape!

Thats the difference.
