Hi i am new to this forum I noticed an old posting from the member pedalboy he was having problems with his s4 He was driving it for 30 mins when all of a sudden it started to misfire lost power and eventually cut out. I own an 1985 s2 which i have owned for approx 7 months. i am having the exact same problem with my car. I understand he was taking the car to paul amstrong which i cant do because i live in yorkshire. Can pedalboy or anyone tell me if he cured the problem and how what was the cause |

Sorry can,t give a definitive answer as my car is a MY 1980, is your car a twin distributor model. If so have you checked the condition of the two drive belts in the distributor,s one or other have a habit of snapping causing similar symptoms. |

Hi Kenny, As per JDS Porsche's reply on the original thread the most likely cause of problems is a relay failing. Replace the fuel pump, injection ECU and ignition ECU relays. Do them one a t a time and see if it makes a difference. All use the standard "53" relay so you can temporarily substitute horn relay for each of these to diagniose problem. If it is relay just buy a replacement - they are standard and cheap parts. There should be a chart behind the central electric panel woooden cover showing relay positions. If the relays check out OK then another possibility is the Crank Position Sensor. When this fails it will cut off fuel. Failure can be heat-related so this also fits symptoms of cutting out after period of driving, then problem disappearing when car has cooled down. the crank sensor is harder to access and change than the relays, so check those first! |

Hello all, am new to this site but have recently purchased an '84 928 that I am currently awarding some TLC. I agree wholeheartedly with the response about relays. Mine stopped last week and the fuel pump relay was intermittent, along with the horn! Also the lower fuse block benefitted from a take out and clean (cured abs warning coming on over bumps). Just one word of warning, make sure the pin outs on any replacement relays are in the same place, some after market fog light ones are not!! Someone had put one of these in the ignition socket causing it to be pulled in at all times and drain the battery over a few days. |

King leads from the coil to the distributer (coil end) corroded possibly. Happened to mine a couple of times though why it only happens after driving for a while is beyond me but it does! ![]() |
