Hi folks, a newbie here looking for a little help please! Had a bout of sympathy for an old 86.5 928, short mot..but worth saving! (hopefully). ![]() Drove about 700 miles with it before winter with no problems, and started to do a full "get to know it inspection". On purchase of the car I noticed that the radiator matrix had been renewed, but there was evidence of oil contamination in the header tank and the hoses had bulged. (No emulsification). I decided it would be best to flush/clean out the cooling system and check the autotransmission at the same time. The "autotrashmission" was emulsified ![]() During this process it burst a couple of the bad hoses during the warm up period for draining the oil, which was not a big deal, but I continued to see more engine oil dripping out of the radiator drain. I thought that the engine oil cooler may be u/s so decided to do one last flush of the autotrashmisson and fill it up with antifreeze (the cooling system) for the winter period. I stepped outside the garage to clear some snow away from the garage doors for a minute (thankfully it was only a minute ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Does anyone out there have a good oil cooler housing that I could use with my good matrix? I also require a set of hoses as well if anyone could help. Really helpfull site folks, and look forward to posting more soon. Thanks in advance, Fuzzy. |

Hi ![]() I have an 86 S2 if thats what you own ??? In the Uk there is not an 86.5 thats an American version with a 32 valve engine ?? When you say you "flushed" the autotransmission what precisely do you mean.... the tranny is at the back...do you mean you drained and refilled it several times with ATF ?? FROM UNDER THE REAR OF THE CAR ??? if so , do you realise it takes between 6 and 8 LITRES of ATF to do that ?? and its a pig of a job to do unless you have a ramp and an ATF pump... Some details would help us to help you, like what year, what engine size....etc, etc... ?? All the best Brett ![]() |

Hi Brett ![]() Yes you are right ![]() ![]() The car is a September 86 S2, 4.7 16 valve, auto. As for the autotransmission, yes you are correct, I drained and refilled it (I have only managed to do this three times up to now, torque converted included). I went to my local factors and purchased 25l of ATF (Comma AQM) but had to order the autotransmission filter/sumpgasket set (still not used yet). ![]() ![]() And yes I was working with no car ramp or pit ![]() ![]() As soon as I got the car running and out of the garage I removed the radiator (almost three months ago) and finally managed to get it pressure tested today. The radiator company said that the engine oil cooler was passing and that they had tried to do a repair (Behr radiator casings), but it was goosed ![]() Thanks for the advice so far Brett, the car is pretty close to being back on the road again as a rolling restoration ![]() ![]() The shell (It's black) and engine appear to be in good order (New Porsche timing belt & tensioner waiting to be fitted) , minor ding/scuff on the n/s wing but very little corrosion. Minor electrical issues as expected but the interior is poor as someone has painted the white/red leather badly to black, a shame as it looks as though it may have been good before this. (Does anyone on this forum recognise who may have done this in the past??? I call him Rab...rough arsed bas**** ![]() Hope that this makes a wee bit more sense and look forward to getting your replies folks! Thanks again, Fuzzy. |

Well I certainly admire anyone who did the tranny oil the way you did....you must be one of those people who just wont give up, well done ![]() Ok, on to the rad... in THEORY a good rad company can rejoin the oil coolers to the main rad.... in PRACTICE it almost NEVER EVER works properly... so the answer is a new rad... or rather a copy rad as the genuine Porsche one is around a grand ![]() I changed mine recently and paid £350 so if you can get one thats "guaranteed" for £400 ...bite their hand off....thats A VERY good price as most cost £500 to £600... You CAN buy them off Ebay, but its risky, very risky...so personally I wouldnt...but your choice... By the way, once the rad/cooler etc is all finished do you know HOW to make sure the tranny fluid is set correctly ? if not I will let you know here... Near side door..... does the handle feel "floppy" ?? If so its a part of the handle broken....its fairly usual... Horn.... (Relay XII Twin-Tone Horns PART NUMBER 141.951.253.B) ( Fuse 18Horns, Rear Wiper-(Rest Position) 15 amp So if thE REAR WIPER parks properly then its the horns themselves (they are under the drivers side wing..remove wheel, then remove inner arch cover and you will see them, mine conked out so changed them for a pair of aftermarket twin horns.... MUCH cheaper) If you are going to do the timing belt and tensioner (not a diy job by the way unless you are a Pro Mechanic as if you get it wrong its a lunched engine:( ) .... you also really need to do the water pump at the same time unless you know when it was last done.... Leather...I had a similar thing done to mine...mine is a "full" leather interior in Linen/Blue and someone PAINTED some of the door leather in white leather paint....and after a few years it cracks badly.... you cannot really remove it, so three choices...live with it (my choice) or replace the seats (Ebay etc) or have the seats recovered by a pro (costs hundreds per seat) Hope this all helps..... All the Best Brett ![]() |
