I need to replace the door mirror glass on my 87 S4.
Easy enough to stick a blank on but I would like to put a new heated mirror in.
Does anyone know how to remove the existing one?

Just put a pair of new mirror glasses into my '44 with blind spot mirrors built in. Fixed them in place with stickaflex as i don't trust the tape that came with them. (Heated the backing with a hot air gun.) Mine were not heated as I don't plan on using the car in frosty weather! I'd have thought it would be self explanatory when you take the old glasses out. Assuming your car had heated mirrors to start with & the wirings still good.

I think you have to be brave with the flag mirrors. It says something like " Pry the glass off with a screwdriver ", but I wasn't brave enough for that, so fitted a whole new mirror. If you fold the mirror, it gives you access to an allen screw if you want to remove it from the car. The door panel needs to come off to get to the wires on the inside.

If you have the Cup/oval mirrors, I don't know where to start.

Let us all know how you get on.

One of mine had fallen out thanks to the hard Winter. Nothing to lose. Really an easy job. Other one I just smashed with a hammer & chipped out the debris. Car looks ace with the new ones in. :)

One of mine just fell out too but luckily it didn't smash, so was able to stick it back in.

How can you tell if they are heated or not?

there's 2 types of flag mirror for the 944, i guess a 87 928 will have the later one;

fiddly buggers if you have same as late 944 then you can see the notches the guide above refers to by adjusting the mirror fully upwards. I did it from the front between the glass and the frame after unsuccesfully poking around through the hole in the bottom (fnar) for about 15 minutes. The plastic ring rotates about 1/2 an inch then the mirror lifts out fairly easily. Couple of wires are socketed on the back for the heater element which just pull off.

i think theyre all heated initially, the glass came loose in mine too last autumn, the element is in the plastic plate they sit in.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Very useful link from Pastry but it looks like my mirrors are a bit different.
There is a hole in the bottom but to one side and that goes to the void right at the back of the mirror.
Yes my glass had just been stuck on with pads and fell off.
The heated pad is still in place so I may be OK just replacing the glass with a heated glass blank.
Should be a lot simpler that taking the assembly apart.
