 Post subject: Radiator removal

All the postings I've seen on rennlist say radiator removal is easy, 10 minute job, no problem.....

well..........

I've removed the two metal clamps and the rubber bits, removed the large top hose and the small one on the left, removed the two screws holding the fans on, disconnected the left oil pipe, cut off some dodgy looking (broken) alarm switch.... I can now move the fans around, lift them up about 8cm, but I just cannot get them out, I have no idea what is stopping them coming out. What have I missed ? I don't see how I can disconnect anything else until the fans are out of the way!!!!

Hi Adrian,

No, I've not, as far as I can see the power to the fans all comes in on the left hand side at the top, direct from the wiring point at the jump post , with the harness routed along the cowling fan support, I think there is enough slack in the cable to at least get the fans free... I'm using the instructions here http://www.nichols.nu/tip381.htm, which seems to imply that the harness can remain connected, or am I misunderstanding it, is there another electrical connection ?

The problem seems to be the left hand top oil cooler connection, from these instructions it seems I need to disconnect it before I can remove the cowling, but I can't see how to do that with the cowling in place as it completely blocks access to the coupling.

Hi George,

This is odd.

Every fan shroud I've had/seen has the wiring coming up from harness below to the connector, not from jump post.

That's what I recall anyway - can double check at w/e.

there should be room for thin spanners at least at the oil pipe coupling, so again I am surprised to hear set-up on your car different.

More ammo to your resigned theory that every 928 was built differently, but I think someone has been in there before you...

Ok after a lot of frustration and brute force, finally got the radiator out (the left hand side oil pipe connections were unbelievably tight) turns out the left hand tank has a hairline crack. I see they have a replacement tank on 928International site, does anyone know if there is anyone that stocks them locally, or is this the only source ?

It's from S4, but you need to check MY with seller as the oil connection pipes changed with 89 onwards.

But if you join 928uk list there are always threads about good places to get 928 rads fixed - there's such a thread today in fact. Are you on that list?

Can also give you number of good chap who may have one to sell (he's breaking an S4 to feed his early 928 habit).

Yes Simon has a magic 928.

Bit of an update.

Got the plastic end tank off no problem, using the method described on Rennlist, no bending of tabs required (well except the corner ones). Just waiting on new end tank from Roger, see if refitting is as easy as removal (of course it won't).

Oh well first job of 2011 I guess.
