I can completely understand the costs so far at OPC labour rates and top whack for parts, and Solihull is a great OPC and I imagine scrupulously honest.

But that ignition lead cost must be wrong. New set of Beru OEM leads is around £300, and that’s crazy when I see sets of leads for other V8s at car shows etc for well under £100. How do they get to £950?

Also they will give you genuine 10% discount if you are TIPEC member!

OMG!!!!

I just checked the prices as i could not believe that,

the 8 plug leads are £80 each Inc Vat, the two Coil leads are £38.00 each, two rotor arms £164.00, two Distributor Caps £183.00, And 8 Plugs @ £15.81 each

plus Labour Rates

Ignition refresh Parts £1163,94 Plus labour

I would be buying Lead and ends and fittings plus tool from Beru and making my own, they all screw together

Those may be OPC prices but no clued up 928 owner pays those.

The lead set is astronomic because they are usually bought as a set, not as individual leads and coil wires. I just checked ECP (I bet my usual US based suppliers even cheaper). The BERU set - identical to the factory set and made by them - is about £350 but includes the two coil leads. Today there’s a summer promo 35% off, so total £234 inc VAT.

There are alternative sources too for the rotor arms and distributor caps from Bosch (the caps are same as used on certain Volvos, which brings price down too).

The plugs may come in a Porsche box for £15 each, but they are a specified Bosch or NGK plug which would probably be less than £15 for a set of four!

928 parts prices are often pricey, but not as pricey as implied above even for identical OEM parts. This is before considering cheaper albeit less high quality options from brands like Intermotor.

Hi Tooquicktostop I genuinely was not thinking of you when I made remark about clued up owners, and apologise if it was taken as in any way personal. Not intended and often forum post can’t carry tone of remark.

What I meant and should have said is that I honestly don’t know a single 928 owner who has bought leads from an OPC, especially as single items not set complete with coil leads.

Am disappointed no one else would take job on, but you’re in good hands at Solihull. Worth asking if they will install Beru leads you provide, which is a saving of £700-800 right there. They are very understanding lot regarding classics and are doing lots of other work, so they will probably be happy to do so. Can’t harm to ask and ECP could supply lead set within a day.

I would love to own a 928, but I struggle with the 968, so double the cost is out of reach

Shame really, and I like to think I’m an expert at finding alternative parts, but it is still out of sight.

And my son works for Euro Car Parts,

Finding bargain parts all part of the fun. I scored a NOS water pump recently from a Porsche Indy closing down - bought for fraction of normal as they cleared all old stock.

There are four parts sellers in US dealing exclusively with 928 Parts and quality alternatives to factory parts. Up till recently Porsche operated very different pricing by market, so some regularly required parts were 25% of U.K. price. You paid vat on import but same as in parts sourced in Europe.

All the injection stuff is standard Bosch, so often used on other vehicles so diligent search saves cash.

Yes you are at double number of leads, distributors, plugs, injectors and can gears!
