928GTSM, if you can read the list of part numbers I supplied then take them to your nearest OPC and ask for prices. Don't forget the other hose that I forgot. I've still to buy a MAF of JDSPorsche on this forum. Once you have the inlet manifold and cam covers off there is quite alot of space, so you should be able to clean round the engine bay. To paint the cam covers I used,

The cam covers went from this,

If you have time I would do the inlet manifold in that stuff too. The other thing I done recently was the gearbox and diff' oil change ( you won't have a filter in your gearbox like mine ). If you felt like it you could do that too.

Let us know how you get on.

You probably will only need a new set of piston rings, and a gasket set. These engines are good for 200k miles !

:) John, that's what I was hoping although I would probably do the main bearings while it's out just for good measure or do you think that wouldn't be necessary? :)

I see this car is now for sale on Pistonheads.

Does that mean you're not going ahead with the rebuild?

Suggest you bring the car to Merry Miller 928 meet 4th Dec - would be a lot of interest in a manual GTS

Good advice. I wish I had the money. :( I also wish I was going to Merry Miller. :(

:( I also listed it for sale on here first, unfortunately my domestic circumstances have changed as I really had intended keeping this car, although the general consensus of opinion on Rennlist agreed with Brett, in so much as the best course of action initally would be to fit a Shark Vent (or similar) and just do a top end refresh. It wasn't so much the oil consumption, which I could have lived with, it's that bloody embarassing puff of smoke that comes out on the over run that I was looking to get rid of.
I'm not sure how much interest there would be at The Merry Miller as I've only had two response so far, the usual I'll pitch a stupid price one and another that seemed to place great importance on the fact that it hadn't had a replacement steering rack. Apparently this is totally wrong as I was told that it's a well known fault of 928's. That's news to me as I've never noticed anything wrong with the steering since I've owned the car, in fact one of the reasons I bought it was because I was so impressed with how precisely it handled for it's weight. I took it out yesterday and was still impressed at how well it cornersa and then came back totally dejected that I've got to sell it, but I won't let it go for stupid money. I washed and polished it when I got back yesterday and then just stood there looking at it, sad but true! :(

Well at the Merry Miller you will find 50 or so 928 enthusiasts who:

- won't dream up fictitious "known faults"

- will appreciate rarity of rhd GTS manual so won't make insulting offers

In fact a guy last year sold a lovely GTS manual at the meet.

People there will know all about GTS oil problems though, so be prepared to be candid about the smoke problems you're having if you decide to attend.

Are you also advertising on the 928.org.uk site? best possible place to reach enthusiast audience.

I don't have a problem in being honest about the smoke problem, I'd be more concerned if it happened all the time or under hard acceleration but it only seems to happen when you come off the accelerator after some spirited driving when presumably there's an excess of crankcase pressure? :?

Hi :)

I just thought of something that may help....

Which oil and which grade are you using ?

Mine is a smoker as I already mentioned and I learnt long ago that Mobil Rally 1 0-40 is much TOO thin for a smoking 928 engine...

I use Fuchs 15/50 (still a full synthetic) which I buy from Opie OILS BY THE CASE LOL....

But the thicker oil "should" cut down your problem a little particularly if you are using too thin an oil...

All the best Brett :)

:) Brett I use Castrol Edge Sport 0-40W which is fully synthetic as that's what the PO used, do you think I should change to something else? :)
