I believe it's the filter for the air pump, only there on S4's not earlier cars. Cabin pollen filters weren't introduced until round about the GTS.

Not a pollen filter but a filter for the auxiliary air pump (reduces emissions from cold engine - designed mainly to meet US regs).

I actually changed the filter in my first 928 before I knew better!
