It's often case that when a failed cap is replaced, it will reveal leak(s) elsewhere as the system is now being pressurised. Realise it must be frustrating for you as I'm sure you wanted to be able too confirm whether or not the cap was main cause of coolant loss. Leak from rear of engine is most likely the short hose between block and heater valve kenthepipe mentioned earlier. Also check whether any leak from bolts (2 per side) at rear of each head. Left side is a blanking plate, right side is that heater valve hose connection. They are accessible with air filter box removed (take off cover, air filter, then the 10mm nuts on base, disconnect hose right side). This check is on my to do list tomorrow, thanks for the advise again |

Removed the air filter (which was dirty, car was supposed to have just had full service!) and the air box and started car, checked all pipes I could see and no leaks, the leak must be coming from the lower part of the engine bay and the leak came almost straight away, the quest to find someone to work on it will have to continue, will have to also add full service to the list now as well ! |

The air filter is replaced every 30,000 Miles on official schedule, so may not have been part of otherwise comprehensive service. So are you saying you still see drips immediately after starting from rear off engine bay? With the undertrays on (at least you have them!) the drips you see could be from original source some distance away. Any chance you could get your car safely on stands at front and whip them off? There is no source of coolant at rear other than those I described. The only direct source low in engine bay is lower rad hose where meets rad, the water pump, and of course base of radiator. Is it original radiator? They often need replacing around 20 years. |

The Rad was replaced 6 years ago according to history, the drips start almost on start up I got a response from Solihull Porsche and have got it booked in for 3rd August for full service and fix the issues mentioned |

That's good news — I'm sure the source will be obvious immediately once it's on the ramp with undertrays off. Good to give other things a once over too. Let us know where leak was when they've found it! |

Do you have a record of when water pump was last changed? With a leak immediate on start up (so will leak whether your expansion tank cap is good or not), suspicion turns to pump. May not be leak in pump itself but through one of the bolts, or the seal to block. The pump sits behind the centre timing belt cover. |

Not seeing water pump, to be honest i have lost interest in the car right now and will wait until Porsche have looked at it, it’s been a real disappointment so far |

Car is now with Porsche solihull and the news is mixed, they completed a full inspection of the car and the following good and bad came up Bad Radiator leaking- new one being fitted today Hose at back of engine for heater leaking- being replaced Oil leak from engine- investigating today Oil leak from gearbox- investigating today Oil leak from diff - new gasket to be fitted today Rear drive shaft gators cracked - repacked today Washer not working- investigating today Good No corrosion underneath the car Having a major service today including belts etc The car has given me a tough start but hopefully I get it back this week and can enjoy it |

Feel your pain regarding the rad, as Porsche hiked price hugely for oil cooler type a few years ago. What are Solihull charging just for rad - £1500? |

The list grows today with the cam belt and tensioner needed and the oil leaks repaired Cam belt is £2600 Radiator £2056 fitted I am just below £10,000 at moment lol |

Well I tip my hat to you for being prepared to spend to bring a 928 back to top condition. I hope the OPC is not suggesting new tensioner as they are hugely expensive and can always be rebuilt - for a cambelt change the only attention needed usually to tensioner is new boot and clamp which costs a few quid, gasket, cleaning up belville washers inside and filling with a few oz of oil. But if not done earlier then idler pulley and tensioner arm bearings need replacing, and there may be sprocket wear particularly cam gears where coating prone to wear. An OPC will always replace water pump and again recently that part has become horrendously expensive from Porsche One thing I always ask potential 928 owners is how much work they are prepared to do themselves, as that can make massive savings on labour and parts (though granted not if you were to cost your own time accurately, but I happen to love working on cars). |
