Hi all, To clean my contacts I used small slithers of pencil rubber that I cut with a Stanley knife ,Then I stuck them to 3-4 inch long strips of thin ally ,that way you can get into tight spaces really easily

I'm sure I read somewhere that the connections are coated and you shouldn't sand them off. Just use electrical contact cleaner on them. |

Good point Lee. I have read some posts and people have been using electrical contact and or a pencil rubber to clean them. However the pod removal may be on hold at the moment. I have had a look at the battery are as Ken said and I have one very unhealthy looking burnt wire attached to the positive terminal. It is actually two thick wires that both attach into one crimp connector. The wires go back inside the car via the boot both contained in a larger black rubber tube/coating. Anyone have any idea what this is? I'll try and get a photo up tomorrow. I'll need to replace this wire as it looks like a fire hazard, perhaps a trip to an auto electrician is on the cards. Possibly this is the cause of my pod problem. |

Have you checked the two connections to the pod? Multipin if you look up under the column you will prolly see them Geoff |

John Speake ( JDS Porsche on here ) will be able to tell you what the wires are. He told me once, but forgot what he said? If only I could remember his mobile number.

Ok got the instrument cluster is out .I know there is a bit of damp in there somewhere so because the glass steams up when the car is hot, so I'm going to carefully dry it out. I'll use a rubber to clean all the contacts and then a clean with electrical contact cleaner. I also want to clean the connectors in the car. Any ideas how best to do this? I'm thinking a spray with contact cleaner then let them dry right out again. |

Right, I've cleaned the contacts and put the cluster back in. No change, same issues  This weekend I'm going to
Check the two connections to the pod that Geoff mentioned Check out that burnt wire. Perhaps cut it back and re-crimp it as a temporary measure and see what happens. Check/clean the grounds at the steering column and at the fuse box. Does anyone know if the cluster is grounded at one of these? Replace the ground strap at the battery. I've cleaned it but it looks a little past its best. Does anyone know the length and if I can just make a straight replacement for one from Halfords? If none of that make a difference I'll be buying a replacement instrument panel to see if that works. |

Well this is a bit embarrassing. After checking all the fuses and being convinced the fuses were fine, I took the advice from Roger at 928sRus and double checked fuse 25. Bang working again! I must have missed it when I went through all of the fuses. So it seems I didn't need to disassemble my 928 after all. Anyway I'm delighted it’s working again For anyone else with cluster issues check fuses 25 and 39. Then double check them. Mike

There is no denying it Ken. You called it. I've learnt my lesson the hard way. Anyway I got the 928 all back together again and took him for a celebratory spin around town this evening Apart from the power steering everything is running perfectly (touch wood).Mike |
