Doesn't look tidy in there does it?

Looks like best way might to be to cut it back then and stick a new bit in. Would prefer one joint though, so might see how easy it is to disconnect at the tank/pump end.

Give me something to do for next couple of weekends!

Thanks Brett,

Regards
Paul

Repaired the leak, or so I thought until it leaked at a joint I put in lower. Started to fix that and noticed a nother leak half way under the car where a bit of plastic tube has been botched in by someone in the past. My moving the pipe further up must have disturbed it.

Going to study the manual again to see if I can work out what part is what and maybe replace.

Either that Or will take a fresh hose from tank to the cut halfway under the car.

Will mull it over.

I did however start her again today and all went well. She is idling slightly low I would say though. Any pointers anyone?

Thanks,
Regards
Paul

Hi :)

PLASTIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It better not be PLASTIC..... thats MEANT to be high pressure METAL fuel pipe to withstand injection pressure...usually around 45 psi......plastic fuel pipe is designed for 4 to 6 psi........

All the best Brett :)

Hi Brett,

Oh yes ... someone has put plastic! I replaced the end bit that was leaking with proper rubber braided fuel line, but further down a length of plastic lurked. (I had not spotted it until today so not enough replacement line to replace the lot) My movement has dislodged it causing the further leak.
The plastic tube is the type of thing you see in a fish tank to fun air into it!
It gets better though - the pro who installed the plastic fuel line stuffed the off cuts in the cavity behind the wheel arch cover. :-)

Also - I made a classic mistake and did not realise the spacer had come off with the wheel (thought I may as well start changing the wheels over) Therefore when I redid the nuts there was a crunch as I went through the nut head totally destroying it!

What I did find interesting is the design 90's on it are dated 1985. Wonder if it was fitted with them originally? Also I thought design 90's came a bit later?

Brakes look good with tonnes of pad left and disc in good condition. So not all bad news!

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul :)

UGH to the plastic...I am not surprised it leaked.....IF you are going to fit rubber fuel pipe, it MUST be HIGH PRESSURE pipe.....there should be a pressure rating stamped on it....

As far as I know...ONLY slots were ever fitted from new on all S2 models...never Design 90`s...

All the best Brett :)

Thanks Brett,

Will double check the pressure thing, but it looks like decent stuff - its braided, thick rubber and well made.

With you on slots only on 928s back then. Must be coincidence.

Will check the part numbers and see if they tell me anything.

Regards
Paul

I think the joint I did is leaking as I have used the wrong jubilee clips (which I bought at the same place as the fuel line)
Looking into it there are specific fuel line clips you can buy that pinch from both sides. Presumably making a better seal.
Have also found a source of high grade fuel injection silicone hose that takes up to 225 psi.

Plan is to take out what I fitted today and run one line from tank to the other bad connection I found mid way down the car.

One joints got to be better than three?

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul :)

Yes the least joints possible.....

Personally I like Jubilee clips BUT you must use the correct size...

All the best Brett :)

Will do. What didn't realise is you can get Jubilee clips and Fuel line jubilee clips as well. Hopefully they will sort it.

Cheers,
Paul

All sorted now! So next stage is to sort the ball thing on the boot so I can get rid of the piece of wood used to hold the boot up.
I found something else while changing the fuel lines..... One piece had corroded though (or possbly damaged) and had been strapped together with what looked like tightly wound bandages and then sealed with what appeared to be gloss paint! Scary stuff!

Wondering if its missing?

Thanks
Paul

Hi All,

Thought I would let you know how I got on replacing the ball stud thing on the tail gate that had snapped off for the previous owner and needed sorting.
Basically the plan was to drill down through the stump of the snapped stud and then cut a new thread into it and replace with one of two I got from fellow list members. One was from another car (Rover i think from memory) and they other had been made by an engineering firm. It might be a good time to remind all that the studs are not screw in, but appear to be welded from behind when the tailgate is manufactured. As a consequesnce if it snaps you are in the poop!

I smoothed off the stump to start with and drilled a hole 5mm wide without too much problem. I then started to cut the thread in when something unexpected started to happen. The stud stared spinning preventing me from cutting the thread. I removed the thread cutter and the remains of the stud just fell into the tailgate leaving me a fantastic clean hole in the tailgate. I cleaned it up with the dremmel removing all paint from around the hole.

Image

I therefore had to re think and simply filled the hole with chemical metal and fitted the replacement stud into this. I somewhat smothered the area on purpose as I didn't want it to come loose.

Image

Then left it over night to set just in case. I need to order new struts, so not sure how strong it is yet, but my massive weight couldnt move it at all so fingers crossed!

Regards
Paul
