Hi all

I have just managed to get a decent rear hatch from Simon Watson and on close inspection I am a bit confused as to whether there should be mastic sealing the gap between the glass and the hatch ,I don't mean the mastic that sticks the glass to the hatch ,rather the gap between the edge of the glass and the side of the rebate that the glass sits in,On my original hatch the gap was filled on all 4 sides and the little black plastic spoiler mounts that the screws go through were encased inside the mastic,On another hatch I looked at the top and sides were mastic-ed but not the bottom ,This hatch had suffered severe rot due to water sitting in the channel at the bottom of the hatch and not being able to escape, The hatch I have got from Simon has no mastic at all on any side but there was a lot of crud trapped in the gap between the glass and the metal under the spoiler and a small amount of corrosion has started to form on one side, I feel that the gap should be filled as there is no way that the water can drain and it is prone to collecting crud that will only retain moisture which will always be bad! But 3 Hatches and 3 different scenarios leave me a bit confused,Any ideas? Many thanks Jezzy ....... Ps.1983 s

I think I know what you mean, the only thing I can remember about this was when they repainted the brown 79 928 on Wheeler Dealers. They did,nt want to remove the rear hatch glass, due to unforeseen problems arising, but I distinctly remember that Ed said that he was,nt too concerned about this as there is a large gap between the four sides of the glass that would be perfect to lose the paint without a visible edge when finished.
That gap was not sealed up level with the glass. ie there was a deepish channel all the way round.
Hope this makes some kinda sense ? It does to me

Hi there, Ken that sounds about right, But it had differed on all the hatches I have seen,With no mastic at the bottom it just creates a dirt trap as there is no escape for any crud and water in the channel under the spoiler and it just sits there as a muddy mess looking for an opportunity to get under the paintwork! Do you think it would be better to seal the gap or leave as is? All opinions appreciated

...., Hi Jez, yes I agree with you, as long as filling it in with windscreen sealant does,nt compromise the fitting of the window surrounds then I would level it off.., and as you say no build up of muck in there.

Hi Ben,,No mastic in yours either ,Seems like a bit of a design fault as as in your picture the gap just gets filled up with crud! Def going to mastic mine I suppose Porsche thought that because of the galvanization it was not originally needed but 30 years is pushing the limits IMO ,Thanks for the piccy
