I've read that an owner of an S4 has had his auto box adjusted by Paul Anderson so that it moves off in 1st gear rather than the default 2nd. Does this apply to S2 autos as well? Do any other owners know much about this or can recommend having it done?

Hi Riskeybusiness,

I cannot answer this one I am afraid but I will look into it.
Suspect that either Tom Furgusion or Jon Mitchell of the Club Technical helplines may be able to help.
Will try to phone them tomorrow as it is something that would be very handy on the drag strip.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbfYtCBRmSA
Porsche 928 S4 GTS Garage 9 Shifter which is a mod I was considering.

To be picky  , it says that Paul Anderson noticed that the modification had been done, not that he did it himself. However this suggests that he could probably give you a better answer than the rest of us.

My thoughts are that if it can be done with the S4 box it can be done with the S2 box, but why would you want to? Porsche obviously designed it to start in second for a reason, perhaps because they though the majority of owners wanted to pull-away in a controlled and refined manner, in keeping with the noble character of a man (probably - it was the late 70's) who could afford a new car that cost more than the average house, rather than in a lairy, wheel-spinning/tyre smoking manner, reminiscent of a boy racer

If you do want to start off in first gear, that option is always available by moving the selector away from "D" (or if you really boot-it when the selector's in "D" the box will change down to first) but, unlike the car in the auction, the majority of S2s do not have an LSD and the standard 7" tyres are relatively narrow, so starting off in first gear will require a bit more finesse.

I am wondering how rare the LSD is. Mine has it by chance. Its about the only option (presume was an option) on my car. I don't even have a sunroof!

I took my old girlfriends 928 S2 to Santa Pod Drag racing a number of years ago. First run I tried really booting it from the lights....and found it was possible to spin the wheels most of the way (no LSD). Trickling it off the line then caning it worked so much better.
My GTS has a PSD and I rarely notice wheel spin even hitting the afterburners at the lights.

I have no idea what percentage have LSD, I think more cars got the later PSD, but that's purely an impression I get from the discussion on other lists and is in no way based on factual evidence of any kind.

However I do have an October 1984 price list, so the "basic" car cost £ 33,491.74 (including VAT) and the LSD is an optional extra at £ 529.48

A sunroof cost an extra £ 935.62 and if you wanted a full leather interior that was an extra £ 2,088.02 - seeing these prices I wonder why so many cars have a sunroof (especially when the car came with air conditioning), maybe they made it a cheaper option in other years.

Its arguably more interesting and rarer than a sunroof I guess? :-)

Hi :)

Its a LOT rarer option (220 I think) than a sunroof...non sunroofs are a LOT rarer as well actually.

I recently fitted an 8 plate (early one) LSD to mine , it was a lot of work...

The 8 plate will lock up to 80% whereas the later 4 plate will only lock up to 40%...

All the best Brett :)

Good news ... I will remember that should I come to sell it at any time. Double rareness!!

And when you factor in Iris Blue being a limited colour as well the value must be huge ;-)

Now if only it didnt look like a sack of poo!
