The published top speed of my 928S4 is 165mph. I wonder what speed it would manage today, after 20 years? I guess the only way to find out would be to take it to Germany, or a track day.
I'm not sure I would dare to "open it up" though. The last time I tried this was about 20 years ago in a Jensen Interceptor. I got to about 120mph and thought "this car goes well" and shortly after that it blew up.
Fortunately the Interceptor uses a fairly cheap (well, cheap compared to a Porsche 928 engine) American 7.2 litre V8, as I had to pay for a replacement.

On past experience you can often get a higher figure than the 'book' indicated on the speedo but even in Germany its hard to get a decent quiet enough road. In the UK it is very difficult to find a private road to do this.....

Hi :)

I regularly use mine at 150 plus.....and I do not mean using Nitrous...that takes it a lot higher....

My ideal top speed, in Germany of course.... is when everything stops those little rattles and the car runs totally smoothly and perfectly.....and that speed which it will do all day long is 145 (on my accurate speedo and satnav)

Do not forget the 928 was designed PRECISELY for that purpose, i.e extreme high speed cruising as a Trans Continental touring GT car....

You do not half get to places quickly lolllll

All the best Brett :)

Don't forget that in the summer of 1986 at The Bonneville Salt Flats, a standard 928 S4 (1987 model) achieved a land speed record for a production car - the speed recorded was 171mph - and on a second run 172mph.

My brother claims to have seen 175 mph on the digital display of my GTS. I did not have a GPS fitted to verify it.
Pity there is not somewhere we could check out our top speeds legally in the UK.
