Understand your position Lightning and it's very easy for me to suggest spending someone else's hard-earned!

The engine should rock when you just move it from idle with a small throttle opening, so it does sound as if mounts need changing.

You would notice a difference with new mounts, but if the car feels ok then could be deferred (though worn mounts put undue wear and tear on the drivetrain).

Needn't be £300 job though I paid that for new Porsche mounts. A lot of 928 owners swear by the Anchor mounts made for Ford trucks and pickups which cost about £20 each and are a direct replacement. No problems have been reported using them for long periods. In fact some believe they improve on the Porsche design as they are solid not hydraulic, so not prone to collapse. Apart from unbolting the mount holders and removing mounts from holders, pretty much all the work to change sump-gasket is needed to change mounts.

It seems to me that the original Porsche engine mountings are filled with some sort of fluid, and in time this is lost, the mountings then sag or collapse down and effectively become solid rubber instead. While this is not as good as the hydraulic system it will be acceptable, as long as the engine does not end up resting on the crossmember! (which mine is not). After 20 years I guess that a lot of the parts would benefit from replacement....shock absorbers, suspension bushes, etc. In time I will get these things done. The next job will be new rear tyres as a. they have been on since 1999 and b. they are different.

Anybody got advice on good 928 S4 rear tyres not too dear?

Where can I get these anchor truck engine mounts? I might get these fitted, even if it's just until I can afford the Porsche ones.

Hi :)

For your tyres...buy Falken 451`s ........great in the dry and good in the wet and a LOT cheaper than Pirelli or Michelin.

As i go through a set of 18 x 10 rears in around 2 months with my Nitrous... lol.....I buy a lot :)

All the best Brett :)

Only available from States where choices include Rock Auto http://www.rockauto.com/ and 928s R Us. Latter run by brit Roger Tyson who is great. His site is http://www.928srus.com/

Don't be put off by fact that several parts of site (including Motor Mounts) still under construction. email Roger, tell him you want a pair of the mounts, and he'll respond with quote and find cheapest quick way of sending them. His service is fantastic.

Tyre's? Same as Brett says Falken 451's. Replaced all 4 tyre's from Michilin Pilot Sport's on my 944T and wow  what a difference. Very comfortable, quiet and the traction is excellent in all conditions. 225/40 ZR18 £80 each 265/35 ZR18 £120 each fitted. If not been done for a while, do a laser alignment at same time if you can, cost about £25 quid for mine.

Got the car back. Bill was £1002. Replace sump gasket, replace engine oil and filter (Mobil 1), remove covers and check/re tension cam belt, PAS fluid replaced, new alternator drive belt. He did a 35 mile test drive and said the car is a "good one" but needs new tyres, mainly due to them being 10 years old.
I'd liked to have had new engine mounts fitted, but they seem to be about £350 a pair from Porsche, and as the cheap Ford alternatives are only available from the USA I couldn't get them in time.

Now it's just the dud air con to sort out!

It's a high bill but not outrageous - must be almost all labour.

The Mobil 1 and filter would cost me around £100 so garage would get it for quite a bit less.

The sump gasket is a tricky job (some of bolts at top of cross member very hard to access) so all down to the guy's labour rates, though with air tools, a lift and a transmission jack (support when mounts removed) things would go pretty fast. If he charges £50/hour then it sounds high, if £100/hour (not unknown) then sounds about right?

Labour.....................700 (14 hours at £50 per hour)
Sump gasket............12.79
Seals........................2.40
Oil filter (gen)............14.25
Oil 9 litres..................99
Coolant 4 litres...........25
Drive belt...................17.43
VAT..........................130.65

The bill does not say how much time has been allocated to looking at the cam belt, whether all the covers were taken off or just the one to adjust it. I did ask him to check the tensioner and warning system.

I did get a quote from another Porsche specialist, less local, and their quote was £500 plus parts and VAT to do the sump gasket, but did not include looking at the cam belt. They said the final bill would "depend on what they found" when they dismantled the car.

You've done ok with that bill Lightning, considering you now have peace of mind re cambelt and are no longer training oil! It is mostly labour as I thought, and I thought the price quoted was ex-vat so not as expensive as I judged.

It is a lot of labour. I would expect a 928 expert to take a lot less time, but then again I plan to do engine mounts soon and would consider 14 hours on it a fantastic achievement at the rate I usually get jobs done!

Yeah you are right at least the car is useable now!

When I've got more money next year I'll take it to Paul Anderson (if I can get hold of him that is) and get him to go over it and do whatever he thinks is needed.
