Had a look underneath the car today, no corrosion apart from some furring of alloy parts. Not bad for 20 years old. My Transit van is showing surface corrosion of the chassis and it's less than a year old.

Flexplate....got the cover off and it needed doing. Released it OK and refitted cover, easy job. (non cat though)

A couple of other things, can anybody advise. The radiator cooling fans stop when you turn off the ignition, the handbook suggests they should run on?
Also the air vents behind the grille at the front of the car are open all the time. I tried the manual adjustment but the motor took over and reset them to full open....so the mechanism clearly works. Where is the sensor for the operation of these vents located? They are supposed to be closed until the engine gets warm, according to the handbook.

Good work on flexplate as that's important if it hasn't been released recently.

On cooling flaps as well as temp sensor there is a controller module. The workshop manual has a detailed troubleshoot procedure for the flaps so if you pick up copy on CD (a few quid) then you could follow that to identify problem component. Wsm very useful for future jobs anyway.

Porsche deleted the flaps from later (MY 92) cars anyway so don't worry too much about fixing. Owners with non-working flaps will often disconnect them in open position anyway.

The fans only run on if engine very hot.

Thanks for the advice. Where can I get the CD workshop manual?

I also noticed that the sump gasket was leaking badly.....and no wonder, all the bolts were loose! In fact some could have been removed by hand. Some of these were a right swine to get at, but I managed to tighten pretty much all of them. (not too tight though)
This should improve matters, but I reckon a new sump gasket will be needed in the long term.

Yes of course...ebay. I should have though of that! Ordered today for £3.

Maybe it'll tell me how to access the cam belt for inspection, as I sure can't tell by looking at the engine.
