Kingroon no need for despair. I think it's still a buyer's market for all but the rarest 928s, and there will be good ones out there (as ever best pickings will be from club members and/or members of 928uk group). £12K is adequate budget for a decent example or one not needing wallet-busting spend to bring up to snuff.

The issue for potential 928 buyers is that these cars still don't make financial sense to restore/improve, despite prices firming up a bit. Hence the logic of looking for ones being sold by enthusiasts not traders. There are many unloved ones out there, given that at one period prices fell almost into 'banger' territory, or at least low enough for the makers of Top Gear to wreck a car!

Well done on having the courage to walk away. I remember looking at a Guards red S2 with the owner asking 6k, full service history. The only documentation he had was a Spanish invoice for 8 spark plugs. The spare wheel was floating in the well and the carpets were awash. Like your example the engine ran, the car drove, but come turning the engine off, nothing would stop it till I removed the fuel pump relay. The vendor was put out when I offered 2k for spares!
