Hello All.
After my recent experience with the cam belt tensioner giving up on my 924S I decided to have my 944S2 checked. I used EMC Motor Sports in Saltley Birmingham. They found upon inspection that the belt was not a genuine Porsche part nor had the tensioners been changed, also the cam timing was out. One reason I brought the car 2 years ago was I have a receipt for nearly £1900 showing that this work and service work had been carried out at a Porsche dealer in Meridian Coventry. I have just had the car back, I also had the clutch change at the same time, they found that the wrong clutch plate had been fitted. My car seems a different car, it ticks over a lot more smoothly, accelerates far better and my clutch does not judder. I can certainly recommend EMC they are a great friendly crowd with a vast amount of experience. SO BEWARE you might think all is ok like I did?

I think if you take your car somewhere for a belt change thats what you'll get and have to accept cam timing is thereabouts. If you ask for the cam timing to be done you will be paying another 2 or 3 hours labour but it will be spot on.
I can imagine not many pay for the cam timing to be done.

I always change the rollers if changing belts but again many garages wont if they are not noisy and are smooth.

Firstly Porsche don't make cambelts, it'll be a Gates or Goodyear or similar. Also there is NO adjustable cam timing on the 944 8V lump it is either on the marks or not. I suspect the crank or cam moved when it was being change.
As for the tensioners I'm not surprised! The belts are around £40-50 the tensioners & idlers will be near another £160 or so with seals & top hats being another £70-90 or so. If the customer can't or won't stump up for it what is the garage to do?

The point I was trying to make was that the invoice I have says that these parts had been changes and the timing was checked. I don’t believe I have any come back with the garage because the car has covered 10000 + miles, and new owner since this work should have been done. Thats why in future i will only use EMC, they are local and make you fell welcome and also you can pop in any time and see them working on your car.

I agree EMC are excellent, and certainly know 924/944/968, the only problem is getting away from them, they just want to talk Porsches all day
