Post subject:  Porsche 944 S No Spark

After reading every forum in the world, I thought I would ask the question for my self as the other discussion are not the same as mine.

I bought an 88 944s with no spark thinking, how hard can it be!!!!!, I have so far replaced the DME relay, checked the coil as per Clarke's Garage and that seemed fine, although when checking with a multi meter the positive reading pulsated, is this normal? I have replaced the rotor arm and distributoer cap as the exsisting ones were worn. I ordered to new crank reference sensor, to find that mine only had 1, is this normal? I can't see were the other would plug in as there is no other socket on the bracket., although there is a sensor shaped hole in the bell housing.
I have checked the earth and had a general good look round.

Now I am lost, there is still no spark, the plug leads are all ok.

Does any body have any good advise, other than giving up, that could help me in my mission to bring this sad old girl back to life? :?

Try and down load the parts catalogue for your car and see if you can tell where everything is. I use them for the exploded diagrams to help locate parts that might be faulty.

2 sensors. Speed & reference. One is missing if you only have one. look for the wiring loom & plug.

Hi, there is another sensor to the side of the bellhousing, what's that? I have looked for a spare socket for the missing sensor but can't find one, and the bracket that they attach to only has room for one plug. I spoke to Douglas Vally, who informed me that some 944's only have 1 sensor, is this correct?

Is there anywhere in this country that can test the DME?

Stu, where in the country are you, some 944s have 1 sensor, some have 2,

Leicestershire, it looks as though there should be two in the bell housing, ones marked D and the other B, the one to to rear is not there, there is a hole for the actual sensor and a 6mm threaded hole for the bolt, but there is no trace at all of two female connects at the top, just one in a bracket made for one. The speedo does not bounce when trying to start, but because I pressumed that it had two sensors I now have a spare one!!!

Hi, mines an 88, It does have an alarm and immobiliser, the alarm doesn't work, but i'm sure it's turned off, the immobiliser i have tested and is only connected to the starter wire (keep that to yourself!!!!!). The car turnes over and smells strongly of petrol when cranking, so pressume the fuel pump is ok. Next step is to try and find a company that will test my DME and repair if necessary. Do you or anybody know of a company that can do this?

Stu have you actually taken the plugs out and checked that the fuel is getting into the cylinders ? If the engine is cranking and the injectors are working your plugs should be soaking wet .
I take it that you have no HT (high tension)spark at the coil yes ?

Hi Peanut, correct, I tested the coil as per Clarkes Garage, seems good, 12v to coil albeit pulsating, new cap and rotor arm but nothing out the ht leads.

Yes, just been to have a look, there is the little box behing the N/S headlight.

Hi Stu,

I have a 944S '87 model. Mine has 1 flywheel timing sensor and a HAWS sensor front left of the Intake manifold (this sends relative position of TDC if the other sensor loses count).

In answer to your DME question, I found a place in Redditch (about 20 miles down the M42 from you) called PRO-9, find it at http://www.pro-9.co.uk. The guy there has a bag full of DMEs - he races 944 S2s. For a small fee he might be willing to loan you one for a day? I slipped him a tenner to try one on mine, although I could drive there...

Hope this helps

Pin out functionality from Right to Left looking into module pins.:-

Pin 1 - Coil - Neg (the Amp switches this wire low, on/off to create HT output from the coil).
Pin 2 - Gnd 0 volts supply to module.
Pin 3 - Gnd 0 volts supply to module, as Pin 2.
Pin 4 - +12volts supply to module.
Pin 5 - n/a
Pin 6-(+5volt) Square wave Pick up signal from DME. (do you have a scope ?).
Pin 7 -Output to drive Tacho

I can test the amp for you where abouts are you ?

Bit pushed for time tonight, let me know if you have any q's ref the wiring tests..
