Post subject:  Oil blockage from separator

I was changing the seals on my oil separator at the weekend as it looked like the lower seal was leaking but it turned out that the contents of the separator had collapsed and completely clogged the lower hole which leads to a tube right down into the sump.

I managed to dislodge a load of rubbish using a metal rod and various other flexible pokey things but can't shift any more of the rubbish. Anybody have any other ideas of how I can unclog this as with it blocked the separator is staying full of oil and causing it to be sucked up through the breather hose?

Also if you remove your oil filler cap and see a load of oil then the same thing has probably happened to you but I'm not aware of it being a common issue.

The top unscrews & you can wash it out in a parts washer. Quite an easy job. You will need new seals to put it back on & probably a new o ring for the top.
Sounds like a sump off job to clear it properly. You don't want anything floating around in the sump to block the pickup pipe do you!

Already had the separator off and replaced the seals. No blockage there anymore but the...err...stuff from inside has disintegrated and is blocking the tube that runs down next to the pickup pipe.

From what I could tell removing the sump involves removing the crossmember with the engine mounts, steering rack and wishbones attached so in other words a pig of a job!

I think my lux has this problem too!

Hopefully this image will make things a bit clearer. Would've posted it earlier but my last post was on my phone due to being stuck in a dentists waiting room.

Here you can see the tube that's blocked, it's the one that joins on next to the pickup pipe.

Think I would go for sucking the stuff up with a syringe rather than poking it down. Depends on the condition & mileage of the engine. Plenty of 150K+ engines for sale for the price of a sump gasket! Well not far off.
