My 944 has the original 15 inch teledials and I am looking to change them for 16 inch or preferably 17 inch wheels - but am not sure what will fit. I want some decent quality wheels, so not keen on replicas.

I am told that D90s will not fit, what about Boxter wheels - which ones will fit and will have the correct offsets. What are the correct offsets for this car?

Any advice welcome!

If it's an 87 car, it should have the ABS offsets for the wheels. Someone more intelligent than me will be along to confirm but think you want 53mm offsets on your new wheels.
That means design 90's and nearly anything younger as far as I know.

Correct, lots of previous posts cover this in detail.
