I'm putting my car in the garage this week for a full coolant flush - the service record appears to indicate it's simply been topped up with anti-freeze over the past 5 years or more so I'm thinking a complete flush to clear out any gunk with all new coolant is the way to go this time.

Similarly, it doesn't look like the brake fluid has been touched for 5 years so that's getting bled and replenished too.

Whilst on the subject of fluids I was also thinking of getting the garage to change the gearbox oil. The service record shows this was replaced about four years ago (4K miles), however, there can be the occasional slight graunch/knock on the gears (occasionally into 3rd and very occasionally into 5th) so thought I may as well get the gearbox oil changed too just to give any minor issues with box the benefit of some clean oil.

Firstly, given the fairly low amount of mileage since the gearbox oil was replaced and that the odd graunch/knock is only to be expected??? is it worth me renewing it?

Secondly, if it is worth renewing the gearbox oil, I understand a good quality fully synthetic is the way to go. Is that correct?

There's a recenct thread on this, I just changed mine 4 speco, was about 54 pounds can't say iv noticed a difference. May well help pro long there life. The noise could be more linkage related? As it's only when ur change in a set gear?

Will certainly do the box no harm to change the oil, Swepco available from Berlyn has good reveiws.

Will get the gearbox oil renewed too - as you say, can't do any harm... got to do all we can to keep these 20+ year old cars as healthy as possible, I guess.

Mark, an old favorite, make sure you can get the filler plug out before taking the drain plug out...................think about it !

Another problem can be needing I think a 17mm allen driver socket type is easiest as the plugs can be tight to get the plugs out, fill plug first as mentioned. I put my fill oil into a squeeze bottle with a long hose on the end and stand it in a bucket of hot water for a while to get runny, it can be quite hard to get to the top plug with the exhaust heatshield in the way so getting the oil thin and using a piece of tubing can allow you to put the bottle where you can get to it and still reach the fill hole (obvious I know).

17mm bolt with a few nuts locked together on it
