2 questions:

1: how do I remove the crankshaft drive pulley without damaging it to renew the oil seal behind it. The nut is out with the help of a flywheel lock but the inner most pulley of the 3 is well n truely stuck. Lots of wd40 on it at the mo. A large pry bar is not the answer as it bent the teeth.

2: Can I change the cam chain slippers with out removing the cams, I have been lead to believe this from American web sites on the cars but they do not give enough info on how to do this. I have so far removed the oil feed pipe but cannot release the tension in the device to remove the upper slipper. Once the upper slipper is off I believe you can remove the whole vario cam device allowing inspection/ replacement of the lower slipper.

You need a puller for the pulley. Maybe a new drive dog for the oil pump. When you put the new seal in don't push it over the drive dog or the teeth will spoil the seal. Either tape up the dog or put the seal on from behind. (If that makes sense.) Clean up the shaft really well or it won't drive the oil pump & you will have problems with oil pressure.
Don't have a 968 so not sure how you do the slippers!

Unfortunately there is not enough room between the pulley and the front cover of the engine, hence i am stumped on how to get the pulley off.
Cheers for the advise on the seal.
There must be a way?????

Hi, having got the crank nut off, the pulley should be free to remove without force, on a 968 you can't do the wear pads without removing the vario cam unit which means the cams have to come off as well. if your doing the wear pads you should also do the cam chain . all the best . :(

Thanks for advise on wear pads, the manual I have is mainly for a 944 so the pad info was wrong.

As for the crank pulley it is stuck fast :-( must be corroded in place
Keep putting wd40 on it and going to take to it with a leather faced hammer tomorrow. fingers crossed LOL

My crank pulley was stuck as well. I had to borrow a puller to get it off which due to the size meant I had to remove the radiator as well.
