Is this a record?

In normal everyday use I generally average 27-28mpg, and the furthest I have ever gone before filling up is 460 miles.

However I've just done 543 miles on one tank of fuel, filled up this morning with 73 litres of fuel, average 33mpg. The fuel used was the new Shell stuff as advertised on TV. This morning I thought I was pushing my luck so filled up at Sainsburys seeing as the light had come on at 518 miles - I'm sure the lady was singing Adam Ant's 'Stand and Deliver' while I paid the £84.29.

543 miles - I drove 450 miles on Monday, to Swanley and back to collect some seats, with a diversion into Coventry on the way back to visit my mother-in-law. On the motorway I disciplined myself to cruise at an indicated 80-85mph, but suffered stop-start at Birmingham on the way down and also had a few sessions of imposed 50mph restrictions. The rest of the mileage has been 'normal' usage.

I'm pleased enough to want to post about it

Wow! That's good. Best I could manage in my S2 was 25mpg on a motorway run @ 70 mph.

Now just imagine what you could have been achieveing if you were hyper miling the car @ 56 mph! Would have taken you ages to get to your destination though.

My 1991 S2 managed an average of 34-35 mpg down to Birmingham and back around 400 miles most of it on the A1M or M1 so when possible running around 80/85 mph but with a big section of roadworks where I was restricted but always moving at 50 mph.

Normall get 26/27mpg round town/work and back and I either use Tesco/Esso 98/99 or more normally Tesco 95 unleaded.

These figures are great. I wonder how a turbo would compare? Off boost it has to be more economical?

A Turbo is obviously more economical off boost than it is on boost, because it is going a lot more slowly and doesn't have to run rich. But a normally aspirated car ought to have an advantage over a Turbo in steady cruising at the sort of speeds where the Turbo is off boost, simply because the Turbo has a lower compression ratio, and in the case of the S2 versus a Lux or Turbo, the 16 valve head should bring a slight benefit too.

Obviously all sorts of other factors will affect individual 20 year old cars, such as maintenance state and size / make of wheels and tyres. But if you have an identical pair, Turbo and S2, I would expect the S2 to be about 10% better on fuel.

Cruising my own standard 1990 Turbo 250 at an easy-going indicated 80ish up and down the A1, with just the occasional squirt when accelerating away from the "two lorries overtaking" scenario, it does between 28 and 30 mpg on Vmax. Spirited driving around the moors and lanes gets it down to around the early 20s.

Just checked the saddo spreadsheet that I keep, and the most I've had out of a tank is 413 miles, but that's because my fuel gauge seems quite pessimistic. In never seems to indicate more than a touch over 3/4 when I have filled the tank, and I generally bottle out and tank up well before I am into the dregs. I rarely use more than 14 gallons to fill up. Since I am often looking for Vmax I don't like to get into the position where I might have to fill up on something else.

Must admit I don't tend to check the miles per tank but still laugh at the econometer hidden behind the steering wheel

Regularly get 450 miles on a tank on mine. Well I did when it was on the road. Using Esso Super worth 50 miles. Pulls harder too.

How was your seats? Spend more time in the petrol station then on the road! But I don't put more then 20ltrs in, 60ltrs more is another 60kg! Surly that's got 2 have an effect?


I also drive with only one sock 2 help keep the weight down

Overall mileage when mine was a daily driver was 33MPG. Lots of motorway & no short journeys. Now it's more like 25.
