Perhaps a ladybird question, but i don't know the answer.

Took the Turbo out for a spin yesterday. Car needed filling up, so i popped to my local Asda. On opening the fuel filler cap, i noticed that it states that the minimum RoN should be 96. Asda Unleaded in 95 RoN.

Will this harm my car and is it worth travelling the extra distance to Shell or BP for some 99 RoN?

I have the same sticker, it won't harm the car however using a better quality fuel will feel better (providing your cars in good serviced condition to notice), best bet is tesco's premium fuel, i think they call it momentum now but that seems to be the best value for money as its a bit cheaper than BP premium (ron97) but with a higher rating at ron99 :-)

Personally, I would opt for V-Power, as it is a lot higher specification than the Tesco fuel, I believe. My Audi S3 has been run on the stuff from day 1 and has never missed a beat ;) .

I have read and heard a lot of anecdotal evidence about supermarket fuel and the use of 99 RON compared to 95 RON. For turbo cars, the higher octane will definitely give you better performance, and most articles rate Shell above the competition. The best option is to give it a try and see what you think :P !

To be honest, no matter what I have driven I have never been able to tell the difference between V-power/Opitmax, and the highest Ron fuel from Tesco's/Sainsbury's. In fact the best i have found tends to be Sainsburys. it always seems to get slightly more MPG compared to any others.

I believe if your car is chipped and optimised for the higher RoN stuff then you would notice a difference. I read an article about super fuel and apparently your car either had to be tuned to the higher spec fuel or have a smart enough computer with knock detection to take advantage. Cars not tuned to higher RoN fuel or unable to adapt could actually perform worse.

Mine will only run on Super now. As thats what it was mapped for. Definitely makes a difference. Both to power & mpg on mine. Likes Esso the best. :roll:

I believe the high oct feels a bit crisper and better around 1000-1600 revs. But I would really imagine the air in take would have 2 match 2 get any real gains from an n/a

82 n/a thought 2 89 and the s2 motors were design 2 run on 91oct so really 95 is 4 octs extra. Turbo was 2 run on 3star (96) lead free and leaded due 2 the knock sensors.

S modle was built 2 run on 95 Ron with a 3 sensor knock detection

Hi,

I found my S2 ran smoother on 99 RON fuel. I used V Power or Tesco 99. I didn't see any increase in mpg though.

When the price of 99 shot up a while back though, I had to go back to the bog standard 95. I find 1 tank full of V Power to every 3 tank fulls of 95 was enough to keep it running reasonably smooth.
