Post subject:  power steering leak.
Noticed a noise while setting off from a parking space today and round conners, checked my power steering resvoiur and it was very low and formy/ bubbly. I top it up and the noise has gone, but I check all my fluids often so it's lost that much in a week. Can't really see were the leaks coming from as it's always been quite damp around the hose ends. But I think it's were it joins the pump as the engine guard is also more damp around there.

I will replace all assorted clips and hoses, I just saw so
E meter long fule lines in halfords, if the dieamtere is the same are these suitable?

Any tips? Do I need 2 bleed the system after? I know how 2 remove air but turn wheels 2 full lock with the cap off and front end on axle stands.

Also were is the fill level ;(

If you run the engine at tickover you may see if it's coming out of the pump around the spindle. If it was hoses you would have fluid under the car where you park. Don't get your finger trapped in the thing checking it though. Poke a bit of white paper under the spoiler! Easier over the pit.

Edit. Should be a dipstick under the res' lid. It bleeds itself with use. After a day the bubbles will have gone.

Take a good look where the rubber pipe joins the cooler - thats a favourite. Undertray off to get to it though. Also tighten up the clips at the bottom of the reservoir.

Check the gaiters aren't full of PAS fluid

Just noticed that the new pipes are £150! Is there something else that can be used? Why are they so much? This was Porsche shop prices.

Has any one made there own or had one made up? There just rubber joined with Terry clips. I understand you want the round end ones, not like there climpted ends.

Normally power steering cooler, in UK can be bypassed with a length of rubber hose.

Got under the car today, didn't remove the undertray, but looks 2 be leaking from a round the rubber gaters area, passed the pump towards the back off the tray. Is this likely 2 be a seal in the rack? Or just the clip on the hose,( like Ricky said ) if it was a rip or a hole in the hose it would be spraying out everywhere?

If thats the case it's time for a rebuilt rack. Long term the only solution. You can get your own reconditioned for around £150. It's just a ZF rack. Though mention the P word & the price will double. :wink: Only problem is your cars off the road until it's done. Exchange one from somewhere like JMG would be easier but costs more.
Just might find a good one on ebay/dismantler but it's lottery.

Jj what makes you say I need a new rack? Is this based on the area were it's leaking? And the fact that the rubber gatter is also wet from above?

OK squeeze the rack gaiters or pop 'em off, if they are full of fluid then the end seals have gone. Other areas for leaks are the pump seal which will throw fluid everywhere. DO NOT run the system with no fluid as if you do you'll seize the pump & knacker it. Pump seal kits can come from Pelican in the US or JMG will do a recon one for sensible money.

Gave them a squeeze, didn't feel like there were full, the gatter was wet on top as well as underneath. The left side is dry. It's also quite grubby under the pump near the sensor, but it's hard 2 say if this is oil or power steering fluid. Brought all new hose clips and even a 2nd. Set up. So once I start I won't be left stranded.

You have to pull the gaiter across like Jim says. It will go back easy enough. A few drops isn't a big deal but if it pours out......... I have a few drips now & then. Not bad enough to justify the expense. Will probably last me years. You really need to degrease it all clean so you can see where it's coming out as the fluid will blow around as you drive & it's hard to see where the leak originates.

Sounds like the pump to me.
