HI All Just a quick comment about my first decent drive in my resto 944 (2.7 model) A trip of circa 100miles on A roads and twisty B roads - loved the car Decent turn of speed, comfy, quiet and loud when you need it. Brill! Ian |

I sometimes forget that when I'm not at work I drive cars that are 20 years old. Glad you enjoyed it, they're great fun. |

Haven't driven many new cars (excepting hire cars for work). But in comparison with my previous 'retro ' cars (about 14 Sciroccos (MK1 and Mk2), a MK2 CRX, 2*924, 924 turbo, Matra Murena) - the 944 is nearest to the Matra in presence and communication. I had the 2.2S Murena (144 bhp) model - which was quick (but thirsty) - the 944 is not as fast (the Matra was a lighter car), but I get a similar feeling about it on the road and feedback from it. The 924 turbo was a very quick car . i had the series 2 and it was still faster than alot of cars i seemed to see on the roads - but couldn;t get used to the aggressive turbo lag - foot down, wait, wait,wait...no power,no power - then hit 3K revs and awaaay you go...! Sorry to offend anyone reading - but didn;t like the CRX (it was the 16v not VTEC model) - just found the whole driving experience a bit null - super engineering and revvy engine, but for me, poor feedback. The 924's are communicative (but slower and noisier) - quite fun on a nice B road - and sciroccos I found to be pretty good all rounders - but after 10 years or so with them, I wanted a change.... I did find though that the CRX was the only car which has had people leave notes on it asking to buy it (even had one kid chase me up a street and ask at a junction if it was for sale!). The 924/944's still turn heads (at least where I live!) - and again are not a common sight anymore. Am beginning to wonder what the 944 turbo is like.... ![]() |

A good 250 turbo is night and day from an N/A. I've always been a boost addict and would find it difficult to cope with normal aspiration! Stuart |

Hardly night and day. ![]() I'm sure the turbo experience is quite different from an N/A though and probably best suited to those that scream away from the lights with tyres squealing ![]() Glad to hear that you are enjoying the 944 experience Doc . They really are a complete driving experience |

Yes, 0 out of 10 there Peanut! Lowtimer has summed it up perfectly and that is where you notice most difference! Stuart |

Stuart well my S2 is chipped so i guess its not a fair comparison but the difference between my S2 and a turbo is pretty negligable .I know which I find the more rewarding to drive though on the roads every day all seasons. 20 years ago I am sure I would have preferred the turbo but now I just appreciate smooth consistant power delivery through the rev range ![]() |

The ideal easygoing road 944 of course, as Barry Hart has shown, is a 3.0 Turbo using the off-the-shelf Turbo 250 ancillaries. All the bottom end of an S2, a big handful of boost by 1800 RPM, no discernable lag, a mid-range that threatens to made the world spin backwards and a continuing huge push all the way through to 6000 RPM. By that point the power curve is dropping off fairly sharply but it still gives the same 250 bhp at 6000 as the 2.5L, and I really don't want to go faster than 6000 in top anyway... |

The S2 is a belting everyday tourer, BUT night and day does apply when driving a modded turbo, my Turbo S has a Tial dual port wg, 3 Bar FPR, Bailey DV, Lyndsey racing chipsets,Adjustable boost and is running 18 psi at the moment. Turbolag is negligible and as already said mid range grunt is awesome, recently a Ferrarri 340 had to really try to out accelarate it..............not pub talk ! The Barry Hart conversion would be a nice way to go. Would like an S2 sometime as an everday user, but the grin when on full boost in a turbo is hard to beat. |

We should just have a sticky saying: 'test drive a lux then buy a turbo, it will save you two years and a few pennies' We got through 2 lux's (luxi?) before the turbo itch started, thankfully managed to skip the S2 stage. Imagine the cost! |

Interesting point of view re have two luxes then move on to a turbo and Im not arguing as Im sure that's many folks experience of 944's. However it doesnt always work that way . I started off with two turbo's and the only 944 I 'would' buy now would be an S2. I'm not saying it to be contravertial its just the truth for me. The turbo doesnt interest me, though a supercharger would for some strange reason. Not everyone wants bang whoosh driving. Driving a 944 can be about smooth power and great handling not just about how stupidly quick you can drive on a public road. Lets face it , whatever people might say they don't actually drive their 944 on a track very often ( if ever), they just drive it illegally and in most cases stupidly fast on public roads whilst thinking they are far more capable drivers than they are. With this in mind , personally I think the perfectly adequate power delivery of a good S2 perhaps with modified suspension could be an absolute top road car. If I was looking for raw power and immense tunability to stupid levels (and no MPG) , I would buy an Audi S2 ( ver2) and run that at 450 BHP quite easily as opposed to a 944 turbo the get 4 wheel drive and great engine note thrown in. I havnt actually driven a 2.7 Lux but I would be interested to do so. Regards Mas |

Post subject: | Re: Views of my 944 - first decent drive |
"Illegal" and "stupid" driving are down to the driver, not the car. Even a Lux is a 135 mph car and will travel at dramatically illegal speeds if the driver tells it to, and you can drive a 944 Turbo very smoothly indeed and arguably it responds more to a smooth, tidy, cornering style than the S2, which is probably a bit more chuckable. Having more midrange poke means that a Turbo can get from A to B more quickly than a less accelerative car even without exceeding the speed limit, because it can get to the speed limit more quickly. |
