Hello all

A new week and a couple of new problems.

I haven't used my 944 since last week and we've had a fairly wet a blowy weekend here in Norfolk. I took my boys out for a drive this afternoon and my eldest sat behind me complained of a wet carpet beneath his shoes.... which indeed was soaked through. The water is confined to the rear driver's side footwell - no signs of water anywhere else inside the car. The obvious place to look for a source of water ingress would be the sunroof I guess, but, all seems well and the car was parked up over the weekend with the driver's seat upright so surely if the sunroof was the culprit then water would have dripped onto the seat first before the footwell if it was coming from above - but the seat is completely dry). I can't understand how the water got in - all my external window and door seals seem in good order. We've had plenty of rain over the past month since I've owned the car and this is the first sign of any water ingress. Any ideas?

Secondly, I tried the obvious idea of unblocking the nozzles, but, nevertheless my windscreen washer jets seem to have given up. The headlight washers are fine though - do the headlight washers and windscreen washers run off the same pump? If yes, then presumably there's a problem with the windscreen washer jet pipework - if there are separate pumps, perhaps the windscreen one has given up. Again, any ideas would be very welcome.

Many thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

I have a small leak on the sun roof of my 968 (maybe the same on your car). The water drips in through the sunroof hinge screw, which maybe far enough forward for it to miss the drivers seat. It's on my list of things to fix, but since the car is garaged it's not very high up the list.

You could try sitting in the car while someone holds a hose on the all the obvious places. Don't forget the top of the hatch door and its hinges - a common place where crud collects.

Separate pump for the windscreen washer. Check you got power to it. & that the pipeworks still attached.
Sunroof seal the usual culprit for wet rear carpets.

Dear All

Thanks for all your comments.

Still a bit confused why the leak has suddenly decided to occur, but, I'll try your suggestions. At worst, seems it shouldn't be such a major cost to address the leak even if it means news sunroof seals.

Very good idea to check to the connections to the windscreen washer pump first (there was me already looking up the cost of a new pump) - will check connections first thing tomorrow morning.

Cheers

Mark

Somebodies flogging the pumps on ebay for about a fiver. Must be the same as something else. Jon Mitchels garage Bournemouth do the cheapest sunroof seal with free postage & it's a pretty good fit. They got them made to a sample for me. You may get away with just clearing the drains carefully. But the pipes are joined a few inches down & no matter what I did to mine I couldn't get a good seal. New sunroof seal cured it straight away. Make sure the roof is adjusted correctly & seating on the bottom seal also.

Thanks for your comments.

The washer pumps going for a fiver on ebay seem to have the inlet and outlet in different locations to my original pump... still, for a fiver it's probably worth a go even if it means a bit of washer pipe re-routing. On the other hand, the original specification ones from Porscheshop are not exactly cost-prohibitive at 25 quid.

On Tuesday I mopped up and dried the wet rear driver's side footwell and did as thorough an investigation as I could to look for the source of water ingress and found nothing. Then, Tuesday evening here in Norwich it completely hammered it down with rain for about 30mins - once it subsided I popped out to the car fully expecting bad news and the footwell re-filled with water, but, this was not the case.

The only thing I can think of is that over the weekend I hadn't closed the sunroof properly or more embarrassingly one of my boy's drinking water bottles had dropped on the floor and leaked and I hadn't noticed - so (particular after there being no water ingress during Tuesday's monsoon-like downpour) it could there may not be a problem with the seals or drain plugs after all.

My washer jets did the same, changed the pump and all the pipe work and could not find a block or anything.
Turned out to be the non-return valves, they sit just before the hose attaches to the jet itself.

You can check if pressures getting through the pipe by pinching it and pulling the lever forward to turn the jets on.

Mine turned out to be the one-way valve blocked solid with gunge, the pump being intermittant & the strainer at the bottom of the pick up pie being cover in gunge. No wonder they didn't work!
