Post subject:  Front engine seal kits

Hi all

I'm going 2 have the front engine seals done, should I change the top hats as well? Is the Porsche shop kit including top hats at £100? And the berylin kit at £54? Is they any cheap kits 2 stay well away from?

Going 2 have belts redone and the chain and slipper pads as well. Is there any brand parts recommaned over others?

Thanks

Nope neither kit includes THs & they are around 25-30 quid each. Berlyn actually lists them. Only change them if they are worn though, especially as on the balance shafts the keyways have to come out.

Only replaced the top hat on my camshaft as it was scored. Balance shafts were fine. Downside of these cars is you can't just pop into Halfrauds etc for bits which means you often have to pull em to bits & then see what you need. Wait for a couple of days for the bits to come & hope that there the right ones!

Thanks, any idea why the Porsche shop price is twice what berlyin is? There pretty close on the other items. Also the chain tensor pads? Do I need top and bottom pads? And there seems 2 be a few different belt types and prices on berlyin some with ten before or after the discribtion, these are the cheaper ones so it ten the brand?

Thanks guys

It's not so much not being able to pop into Halfords, I've found it's the dire lack of communication from the specialist suppliers that slows things down.

Apart from Alasdair on here, type911 and the US suppliers all of which have done exactly what they said they would do when they said they'd do it and will now be my 1st port of call others are just plain annoying lol.

Emailed one supplier 3 weeks ago for front end service parts so not an uncommon request, no reply so gave them the benefit of doubt due to recommendations and picked the phone up, helpful enough but the call back with a price never happened, called them back myself next day still no price and still waiting a call from them 10 days later. Type911 got my business in the end no idea if they are same price wise but who cares times money if you spend an hour chasing people it's an hours wage lost my end.

Box of goodies arrives this morning from another supplier with a note in saying "oil pump drive gear will be cheaper from main dealer". What's wrong with telling me that at the time when I placed the order so I can order ffs. Now looking unlikely my baby will be going back together this weekend unless a miracle happens grrrr

I quite agree this is one of the reasons I use Bert at Berlyn, not the cheapest but you ask for a complete front end kit for the relevent 944 & get it, whereas all the others want me to go through their dodgy websites picking part no's that don't correlate to Porsches! Also when Matt & I had a problem Bert was very helpful & faxed the relevent TSB across.
