With the engine running and while sitting in the driver's seat there is a fairly quiet but audible hum from the right hand side of the back of the car. Depressing the clutch and putting the car in any gear don't seem to make a difference, and the pitch doesn't change noticeably when revving the engine a little (though the engine sound soon drowns it out). The car is a 1992 968 Coupe. Are fuel pumps known to get noisy? And if it is likely to be the pump should I be carrying a replacement around with me in case it goes? Or should I just replace it outright?

That is where the fuel pump is, old pumps get noisy as the rollers get scored & they have to work harder. When was the fuel filter last changed? Also the mounts for both the pump & the tank rust through which would be worth a check.

Thanks Jim. Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure it's due a fuel filter change... I can check the mounts at the same time.
