The clutch problem could be hydraulics or contamination on the clutch plate.
The fan could be otter switch or relay.

Just a quick hi from a new owner, I bought my first 944 a week ago and what a first week of ownership. The car is a 1989 S2 Cab, it has covered 92,000 miles has a comprehensive history (a couple of stamps missing) all old mot's and a folder full of receipts. It had the belts changed 2 years ago and has only covered 3k since then. There is no mention of a replacement water pump in the last 2 cam belt changes though so I am thinking of getting this done sooner rather then later. On Friday the car developed a problem in not wanting to go into reverse or 1st from idle, if I put the car into 5th first it would then drop into any gear. The only other way of selecting 1st or reverse is to switch the engine off and engage the gear then start the engine. After doing some research am I correct in thinking this is likely to be either the master or slave cylinder? After giving the car a run out this morning to the Goodwood meeting I returned home to find the cooling fans constantly running, again after researching this forum am I correct in thinking this is likely to be a faulty thermoswitch? One other small question, the cabin has quite a strong smell of petrol, is this normal or should I be looking for something else? The car is booked into to have a check over tomorrow so these problems will be addressed as well, its then booked in for a paint correction and detail as the paintwork has a lot of swirl marks. Thank you for the quick replies, hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it tomorrow and I can then start enjoying the car. I'll hopefully get along to one of the meetings in Kent soon. |

Hello, Don't beat yourself up about the waterpump get it done next beltime, get the clutch master cylinder bled and change the gearbox oil to swepco which is available from Bert at Berlyn Services (Google it) As said check fuel lines at the back for corrosion leaks. Get it right and enjoy and get some cavity wax in the sills ! When these cars are right and maintained they are a joy ! |

Thank you all for the welcome. The cooling fan problem was the thermoswitch which is being replaced. they've had a look at the cylinders and the fluids and the problem is still there so the thinking now is maybe a new clutch. Checked the fuel lines at the back and all the way through to the engine bay and no signs of corrosion so maybe I'm being a little paranoid. They also found one of the bolts on the driveshaft has snapped so they are sorting that problem now too. |

I also have a cab and was suffering from fuel smells.Mine turned out to be the fuel return pipe had split where it goes into the tank on the fuel guage sender.Worth an easy look , just lift the boot carpet and you should see the sender unit , possibly under a rubber grommet. Toby |
