Post subject: | Temp gauge |
Hi, My 968 temp gauge runs very low compared to other cars I drive (not 968's). I checked handbook but it dosen't really give a definate level the gauge should show, only that it should come above the first segment and the fan should come on before reaching the last, which it does. If I'm on a run (plenty of airflow) then will stay just above 1st segment, if in traffic fan will cut in just before midway and drop it back near to 1st segment. Maybe I need new thermostat & pump but just some advice that I won't be damaging anything if left until next year for changing these??? Thanks Steve |

Hi Steve An older thermostat will give these symptoms and is nothing to worry about. As long as your car stays between the two white marks then you are within normal operating temperatures. If you renew the stat you will notice that normal running will be about half way or maybe just above when the stat is brand new. Stuart |

My 968 temperature gauge always used to sit too low, but after a service at Hartech the year after I bought the car, they commented that the cap on the expansion tank was lifting a bit early. I replaced it with a new one and the car ran warmer from then on. Last year it seemed to be running a bit too warm (just above the halfway mark, or higher on a warm day at motorway speed) and I had a new thermostat fitted. The gauge now sits just below half way and is very consistent. Try a new cap first, but after that, the next step is a new thermostat I think. |
