My gear leaver been like this sense I got it and had done 12000 miles like it. There's play mostly side 2 side when in or out off gear. With the egine turned off I can engage gear without clutch pressed in. So I checked out the pin on the shifter and that's all tight and no play. It's the rod that links the shifter pin 2 some thing? I'm guess the transmission box. Is there any way 2 eilmanted this play. It's wobbly and with a little force can be moved back and forth the Gears

Thanks Terry

It might be worth checking the rear gear linkage for play. It's situated ontop of and slightly infront of the gearbox on the passenger side. If you take the rear passenger wheel off you should be able to see it but the shock absorber makes access a little tight.

As for being able to put the it into gear without the clutch and the engine off I'd say this is normal as whenever I've tried it with other cars I can usually slip it into a few gears (but not all). I don't think I've tried on the 944 though.

I have just had my mechanic fix my sloppy gear change. The gear lever used to move either side (i.e. from door to door) when in gear by about two inches.

I posted a thread on Rennlist and a guy sent me a pdf of a fix using a 968 gear lever. I havent picked the car up as yet, but they tell me that the gear change is like new now.

If anyone wants a copy of the pdf insructions (that are home do able if you are competant - unlike me) PM me your e-mail address.

There is also a knuckle on the gearbox that can be adjusted, but the common case of sloppy gear change is the gear lever itself.
