| Post subject: | 944 Wheel offset question |
I have my eye on a set of 16in Boxster alloys, 6 x 16in ET50 and 7x16 ET40. Currently i have standard D90's 7 x16 ET52 and 8x16 ET52. Tyres are the same on both sets ie 205/55 front and 225/50 rears, so radius isn't a problem. Without going into too much techy speak will the Boxsters fit or am I looking at spacers ?  Thanks |

The reason I am asking is that my D90's chronically need a refurb and a new set of tyres all round . The boxster wheels are pretty perfect and have decent rubber attached, all for less than the cost of just tyres for my D90's. Is the 6'' front really going to be that noticable ? |

Look wise? Prob not if the rubber is the same width. Think there going 2 sit closer onside the wheel arch, use a off set calculator online 2 find out what difference it will make. Also that the tire width is right 4 the rim. |

I think the 6" rim willlook wrong as ive had 7"x17 boxster wheels on a few of my 944/968's and the front wheel always sat slightly to far inside the arch (used with 205 and 225 width tyres).As far as i can remember an 8mm spacer should do the trick for the 7" rim so should be the same for the 6" rim as the offset will push them out slightly more than the 7's with a 55mm offset. |

What size tyres are on the Boxster wheels? They may be the same as the D90's I do think going to a 6" and 7" will be a downward step |

Thanks for the comments. I have played with a few online offset calculaters, (which all seem to disagree with each other) But the general consensus seems to be that the 6'' fronts will sit 8-10mm further inside the wheel arch and the 7in rears sit a couple of mm further out (which suprised me). (911Perv- tyres are the same- see initial post  )

The 7" rears are a 40mm offset where as normally for a 944/968 the rears are between 47-65mm so the 7's will sit out 12mm further than the d90's on the rear. |

The rears will be in the same place, because the 8" rims also have an offset of 52.3mm. The wheel rims are one inch narrower but they stick out by 12mm more (half an inch, near as damn it), so theyll be in virtually the same place relative to the wheel arch. For every extra inch of wheel rim width, you need to increase the nominal offset by 12.5mm, to keep the centre of the rim where the designer intended. A higher offset figure (for eg. ET65, over ET52.3) equates to a wheel which has a greater percentage of its rim inset. Thisd all be clearer if we referred to wheel inset, isntead of wheel offset... |

This is what I worked it out to be as well, the lower offset (40 compared to 52.3) negates the change in width from 8'' on the D90's to 7'' on the Boxsters. The 6'' fronts will sit approx 8mm inside the wheel arch, which I wouldn't think would be particularly noticable, however, if it is, a set of 8mm spacers is only approx £30. (Oh, and the full set of Boxster wheels with tyres has just cost me £85  )

They can be cheap cant they? I paid £100 a couple of years ago for perfect wheels with crested centres too! |
