Just a little story to add to the wisdom of a little nightmare I had a couple of weeks ago.

I finally got hold of some new wheels - I've been waiting years to do this because the D90s are shot to bits, but could never justify getting rid of good rubber.

Well this summer, the car came out of the garage with perished from tires, so I got some Cup 3's with good rubber for not a lot of cash.

Went to take the D90s off, and couldn't shift a single wheel nut. I took it up to the local tire shop (the good guys, local outfit, know their stuff - not kiwkfit) and they managed to shift 19 of 20 wheel nuts with some very large persuasion. They reckoned that the previous tire shop had put all the wheels on with an airgun.

One of the nuts sheared off, and took nearly three hours for the guys to get the wheel off the car, trashing the alloy in the process.

So there's the story. I think the moral is not to let idiots with airguns anywhere near your pride and joy.

Cheers,

Ian

I sheared two of my nuts taking a wheel off of the Speedster when I first bought it. The OPC's are good at getting them off without shagging the wheel.

Lesson learned, torque wrench bought and I won't let any tyre firm use an airgun on the Porkers.

Also an issue with using the incorrect socket, also you should use a smear of anti-seize on the mating faces of the nut where the conical face is. They seize to the wheel. always use a torque wrench on the wheel nuts & recheck after 30-50 miles, by loosening & re-tightening to 93 ft/lbs on the wheel nuts.

I'm always requesting the bolts are removed by hand, when I changed my wheels I had 2 hammer on 16mm socket heads on 4 of the nuts 2 get them off

For info - maybe it will help someone...
When a wheel nut sheared on my project back in Jan (the stud was fine, but the wheel nut sheared around the stud) - I used a diamond encrusted tile drill bit £10 from B & Q)- one that's designed to cut a hole in tiles without damaging the alloy. A bit of time and patience and it was fine.
Cheers
Ian

timely reminder
I always insist on removing and replacing my own wheel nuts . Always have on alloy wheels. I take a proper wheel brace with me which spins them off and on quickly. Most tyre places are only too happy to let you get filthy dirty and sweaty . If not I go elsewhere. I always insist on supervising the jacking too.
Only fly in the ointment last month when the tyre guy threw all my Porsche dust caps away without me noticing
