Hello,

I am about to get all belts and tensionrs changed on my 944 auto do I need to or is it recommened to change the water pump and thermostat some garages say I should this car is 28 years old I don't mind spending the cash but it will cost a small fortune to get all this done. I am currently in Germany so I will be driving back to UK to get this work done as the Germans charge a fortune for car parts etc. I am hoping to be in Derbyshire this year so if anybody knows of a good garage or specialist that would be mint?

How many miles has the car done and when did the water pump last get changed? If you don't know when it was last done then, if it was me, I would do it. The cost to replace againt the cost of repair due to failure do not even come close.

The general rule of thumb is to change the water pump every other belt change, you change belts every 4 years or 48,000 miles.

If you don't change the pump and it fails you will need to change the belts again so you might as well bite the bullet and do it all in one go.

Zentrum are based in Nottingham and have a good reputation.

As everyone has said, the other problem is if the pump fails then the belt comes off & bang! New pumps need new thermostats as it is fitted into the inlet. The stat is a right royal PITA to change with the pump on the car.... think brass stat, steel circlip & alloy housing & very limited access to a very tight circlip. Vorsprung Durch Tecnic it ain't. Belts are due at the longest every 45K miles or 5 years but most reckon on 3 years & 36K.

Kirkmans are now trading as PH sports cars. There is no change in staff or ownership, Paul took over Kirkmans and as they MOT it was simpler to carry on trading in old name.

Simon who runs the workshop is OPC trained.

They look after my 924S, 944 S2 & 964 & as stated before £35 an hour on pre 97 Porsche's.

Don't be put off by first appearance of premises as they break a lot of Porsches & Mazda MX5's.
