After getting home after a reasonable run yesterday I went outside after about 45 mins and my 924S was making a noise. The best way I can describe it is as if the engine was still running (which it wasn't!) but quieter.

After a few minutes of checking the noise hadn't stopped so I started the engine, stopped it and the noise stopped.

Any ideas what it was? Is it normal?

Thanks

Cooling fans - had you been driving in traffic for a while?

Do you mean that you parked it and then 45 mins later it was making the noise?

My 944 did this. It was simply a case of replacing the rad fan switch (after a quick diagnostic check).

Yes.

It just didn't sound like just a fan.

How easy is it to replace the switch?

The 944 fan is large and most are noisy I would think due to their size/aged bearings, so if you're not used to the sound it makes when it cuts in it could well be the fan. However, I'm wondering if you had a pump that was sticking on (although this is a very unlikely scenario).

Basically, if it is a persistent problem then you need to identify the source so next time it does it lift the bonnet to see if you can eliminate the fan as the cause, then come back to the forum for more advice. If it only happens once then there is nothing you need/can do about it.

The rad fan switch sits in the uppermost 1/4 of the rad so I 'cheated' and drained enough to get the switch out without flooding the engine bay. Afterwards you need to replace the lost antifreeze/water mixture and bleed the system. Finally you need to obviously test the switch operation by getting the engine hot.

Bear in mind though, yours sounds like it might be down to a dying relay owing to the intermittent nature of the fault (relay contacts tend to 'furr' up and fuse after many cycles/age). Whatever you do you will probably need to get hold of a multimeter to do some disgnostic checks before wading in replacing suspect parts.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice - I'll have to see if it happens again.

i had the same problem, but intermittantly the fan would go out after turning the injun off, i also caught the water in a bowl and refilled it as it was only about an eggcupfull
