Post subject:  968 wing mirror mechanism

Hi guys,

My driver-side wing mirror mechanism seems to have bitten the dust. While the passenger-side one still works fine, I can no longer adjust the up-down angle on the driver side. Left-right adjustment still works ok. I'm guessing the control stick works fine, and presumably the switch in the centre console to select driver or passenger side adjustment is still working ok since the passenger side works and the driver's side half-works...

I'm presuming I'll have to scavenge parts from a broken car if it's not just a dodgy connection - but how do I get the mirror apart?

Thanks,
Gus

Don't have these so don't know but I'd check it's not the switch or a broken wire first as thats easier to do!

Hi Gus,

I've retro fitted 968 mirrors onto my 944. If you look on the bottom of the mirror casing, there is a hole. If you shine a torch in through the hole, you may be able to see a large wheel with slots cut into it. What you've got to do using a screwdriver is turn this wheel. I can't remember which way but it's about a 1/4 turn or there abouts. Once you've turned it, you need to slowly weedle the mirror out of the mirror mount. Be careful because replacement mirror glass is around £50. You should be able to get a couple of fingers in behind the mirror. When the mirror pops out, there will be a couple of spade connectors to take off the back of the mirror for the heating element. Once thats done, the motor is right in front of you. Just make sure non of the plastic motor mount has popped out. It's more than likely that this may have happened causing you to lose the up down movement. Failing that, mirror motors pop up on eBay regularly for around £15 - £20 new.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Just remebered, there was a good how to guide on http://www.951motorsports.com but the website doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Does anyone know what happened to it or if the pdf document is available else where?

Its not ideal and the pictures are a bit blurry but you could also try:

Our ARO was talking about mirror motors for 944s being the same as those found in Ford Mondeos not sure of the model but might be worth a look as they will be a lot cheaper and more available than anything with Porsche on it.

Do you need to replace the 968 mirror bases to fit a 944

Nice use of the word " weedle" Ben! I'm going to use it again today.
I think flag mirrors were used on all models of that era. The only difference was cup mirrors, so I guess 924/944/968/928 mirrors are all the same?

968 mirror bases will fit fine on a 944. If you buy any teardrop mirrors off eBay, if they have any other 911 type bases on, these will need to be replaced for 968 style ones.

I had a similar problem, mine was the a broken/ missing end 2 a lifting arm on the motor, or can some times be the sound which the ball clips In too.

The mirror motors are pretty much the same 4 all cars b4 2000 so u can source them quite cheaply. Don't get a one from a scrap yard as there want 2 sell u a whole wing mirror.

Now they are a set side, this is due to the White plastic cross member between the two motor, is diagangle. And the back off the mirror glass is recesed to fit.

At the mo there's this on e bay.  Porsche 996 & 986 Mirror Motor. Now if u look at the pic, any other mirror motor that looks like this will fit!

If u get a different car make u will need 2 re solider ur existing wire 2 the new motor. Use a solider iron to heat up the existing solider point, and remove them from the motor base. Don't try 2 snap them. You may need 2 use the solider iron 2 melt the cable routes so the back case will fit back on.

I done all this recently on my 944. With cup mirrors. Not sure if the 968 wiring will be slightly different. But I had 4 cables and just transferred them a cross. If u send me' ur email I can email u a few pics I took.

With removing the glass. There a rather complicated lock ring which once rotated over laps the 4 coner lugs which fit in the 4 small holes on the motor. Ur see the 4 point which stick out from the round motor.

Fold ur wing mirrors out and away from the car. This will allow you much more room and movement 2 unlock the lock ring as mentioned above, once unlocked the glass will simply almost fall out, do not froce it. If force is required it's still locked. Mine went the same way on each side, so one side was away and the other towards.

Locking the ring again after isn't as tricky as u think! If the 4 lugs on the glass has sat back in the 4 holes on the motor, and the lifting arms are also cliped in. If there not the mirror will feel floppy.
