Hi everyone, I hope someone can help! I bought a 1988 944s a few months ago and absolutely love the car. However last week I started the engine heard a bang and something like exhaust fumes seem to be escaping from the engine. I lifted the bonnet to find the air hoses had become detached from the air flow meter. First thing I thought was timing and the dread of an engine rebuild. However I had just had the belts done and the mechanic who replaced them has just checked to say everything is in time and not to worry about bent valves as he can get the engine started but it then cuts out after a few seconds. Tried a new DME relay but that has not made any difference so I am just a bit stumped. Think an auto elec is needed next. The mechanic thinks the air flow meter is at fault but would that cause a blow back in the engine??
If anybody has any ideas what the problem may be i would be grateful. I want to start driving it again!

Sounds to me like it back fired. This normally destroys the AFM (Air Flow Meter) & if that doesn't crack open when you crank it, then you'll have no fuelling.

Hi Jim thanks for the quick reply. I think it was a back fire so I guess I'll look for a new air flow meter. Do you think the air flow meter could have caused the back fire? Probably showing my lack of car Know-how here! Very good a polishing cars but not so good at the oily bits.

Normal reason is ignition issues, cracked dizzy cap, knackered rotor arm etc. Or stuck inlet valve.
It may be worth stripping the AFM off & seeing if the "Barndoor" still moves, sometimes they can be freed up.

New there £150 (From JMG) or if you ring JMG with the part no they may have one that can be refurbed for a lot less. If your lucky! :)

Thanks that's a lot cheaper than I've been quoted. I was told £420. I thought that sounded expensive! I'll certainly check that out.

thanks for the offer but the garage called this morning to say that they have no idea what the problem is and that i'm best off going to a porsche independent. So the transporter is picking it up on monday. Hopefully these guys can tell me whats wrong.
